The city police claims to have unearthed a major racket involving retired and serving medical practitioners who inflict injuries using surgical and other equipment on people looking for medico-legal report (MLR) needed to register criminal case against other parties.

One person, identified as Rattan Lal who retired as medical practitioner from Sri Guru Teg Bahadur hospital, has been arrested while more arrests are likely, the police said. A case can be registered under harsher sections of the CrPC if the injuries on the body of a person are serious in nature.

The matter came to light late on Thursday when a group led by one Megha Singh and clashed with another led by Harjit Singh at Bisamabarpura village. Harjit’s party was surprised when several people from Megha’s party submitted medical reports citing serious injuries and filed case against him and others. Megha claimed that it was a minor scuffle and Harjit’s people were not hurt.

On inquiry, found that injuries were surgically inflicted on the complainants by Rattan Lal. Later,Harjit and his associates struck a deal to get serious injuries, for which Lal demanded Rs 20,000. megha also informed the police officials. Later that day,Lal reached a house near Putlighar armed with surgical knives, hammers, chisel and cutters and started “operating” on a person.

Lal was caught red-handed after he had sedated the decoy and inflicted a deep injury on his hand. Meanwhile,Megha’s associates recorded the whole procedure.
