Log On

Are you the only one logged on to a movie site? Is the city cheering for the FIFA World Cup or is it still stuck on cricket?

Communities on patriotism, style and Bollywood are the most popular, says an online survey

Are you the only one logged on to a movie site? Is the city cheering for the FIFA World Cup or is it still stuck on cricket? Is the desi girl more sought after or the stylish damsel? Google India answers these questions through the Orkut Zeitgeist,a survey that looks at how people are using communities on the social networking site and which communities attract the maximum traffic. “Patriotism is a powerful emotion in India while being stylish is a growing priority too,” says Rahul Kulkarni, product manager,Google,as he points out that the community ‘Stylish People’ has witnessed the maximum clicks from Chandigarh as well.

With about 20 million users across India, most of whom are in the age group of 18 to 24,Kulkarni says,“Selena Gomez has emerged as a popular personality across the country. As for Chandigarh, the geri route community has lost charm.” People are keen on exploring personality traits and like to connect with communities like ‘Punjabi Junction’,‘Wassup Youngistan’,‘I’m Moody’,‘Friends make life beautiful’,‘I like simplicity’ and ‘Smile no matter what’.

“Last year, when the economy was in a bad shape, the focus was on the Indian stock market. Now,Bollywood stars are grabbing a lot of attention,” says Kulkarni. Salman Khan, intentionally,is the most popular in the region while Shahid Kapoor is so across India.

Besides, with the recently concluded FIFA World Cup,the craze around communities dedicated to football teams has also increased. “Arsenal FC,Manchester United,Liverpool FC,English Premier League and Chelsea FC are among the most popular. As for cricket,Sachin Tendulkar,Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rahul Dravid still rule,” he says. Talking about the music industry Kulkarni says,AR Rahman,Enrique Iglesias and Micheal Jackson take the cake. “Also, the choice of themes reveal that youngsters here like bright and happening places with an Indian twist,” he signs off.
