Little Love Story

The poster of Teree Sang has a striking similarity to the Oscar-winning film Juno. The characters and plot might remind you of the Hollywood film too,but director Satish Kaushik insists that the movies are totally different. “This is not a Juno remake,” he says firmly,“Yes,it is the story of a school girl getting pregnant, but that’s the end of the similarities. I have stressed on the romance between this school-going couple.”

In fact,Kaushik had already finished writing the script of his movie before he heard about Juno when he was at the Toronto Film Festival. “My inspiration was not another film but real-life stories of pregnant teens,” he says. Kaushik was browsing through the Internet and discovered a website called standupgirl.com which has true stories of teenage girls dealing with pregnancy and abortion. “I read such heartfelt stories that the girls had written about their experience and immediately felt the need to make a movie based on this issue.”

The movie shows a 15-year- old school girl getting pregnant and a 17-year-old boy helping her go through with it. The issue of teenage pregnancy is still quite a taboo in our society and the film aims at sensitising people about it as well as being a sweet romantic flick. “It’s a pity that people will not talk about it. In our country the girl is either married off immediately or the child is aborted. There is no other way and that’s not the right way to deal with it,” says Ruslaan Mumtaz, who plays the father of the child. “My character fights all the opposition from society and makes sure that the young girl is taken care of when she needs it the most.”

Kaushik auditioned hundreds of girls for the role of the young mother. Some even refused to audition after they heard about the character, but Sheena Shahabadi believes this is the best debut she could have got. “A lot of girls will be able identify with what I’m going through. Priety Zinta had acted as a pregnant teen too and people keep comparing my role to hers. It’s nothing similar but I feel proud to play such a strong character in my first film,” says the 20-year-old.
