Post Bigg Boss, life is moving in the fast lane for Vindu Dara Singh

Dara Studios in Mohali is in action mode. Cameras are being set up,there’s a blanket cover of wires on the floor, spot boys run errands with nervous delight, assistants bark orders while the director works on his next angle. Amidst all this activity,Vindu Dara Singh takes time out, pulls a chair and is game for a quick interview. The last couple of months has been a rollercoaster for Singh, post the win at the reality show Bigg Boss. He has been flitting between film projects and the TV dance show Chak Dhoom Dhoom for which he is a judge, and Singh seems glad for it. “Things weren’t happening that way I wanted them to. I took anything that came my way, without even glancing at what the filmmaker or producer across the table was offering me. I just wanted to keep working,” he says.

Today his fan following has swelled and Singh goes misty-eyed when he talks of the affection that his home-town has showered on him. “It’s because of the love I have got from the people of Punjab that I signed Guddu Dhanoa’s first Punjabi film,” he says talking of his latest project The Lion of Punjab. An issue-based film,it stars Divya Dutta,Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh, comedian Ghuggi and Pooja Tandon of The Perfect Bride fame. Incidentally,Singh plays the lead—a good cop— in the action film. “It’s a characteristic Guddu Dhanoa film— it almost feels like I’m shooting for a Hindi film,” he laughs, adding,“The Lion of Punjab will give the Punjabi cinema a big boost. It’s for the first time that an action drama is being shot, and it will be a huge hit.”

Lead roles haven’t come to him much, but Singh doesn’t seem to mind. “I’m a character actor. Lead roles are not that big a pull for me. I’m lucky to be in a position where I can choose what I want to do. There are offers everyday, but I’m selective now,” he shrugs, pointing out at the line-up in his kitty: Anees Bazmi’s film with Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt, one Sajid Nadiadwala film with Salman Khan and a part to look out for in David Dhawan’s Partner 2. There’s something though that he really wants to do—play the villain. “But post Bigg Boss, people only want me to act myself. Nobody wants to see me as a villain!” he exclaims.
