Passport office to start online system
Jalandhar: To speed up the visa process for applicants from Doaba,the Jalandhar passport office will introduce an online police verification system for the first time from October 3.Under the new system,the office will send all details of applicants to concerned police stations for verification online. Passport officer Parneet Singh said the earlier method of physically depositing documents for verification consumed a lot of time. With the online system over a weeks time can be saved for the same exercise, Parneet said.
No politician should head SGPC
Jalandhar: Asserting that no politician should be made president of the SGPC,Senior Supreme Court advocate,HS Phoolka on Saturday said only those who have accomplished something and made the community proud should head the apex Sikh body. Addressing the media,he said the SGPC elections should not resemble the assembly polls. Phoolka urged Sikhs to evolve a new system of elections for the SGPC.
HP co-op bank takes lead in core banking
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank has taken the lead by becoming the first cooperative bank in the country with core banking facilities for customers. The bank will also introduce a mobile banking facility in the state for the benefit of the rural community. Disclosing the information here,Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on Saturday said the bank has been told to keep pace with modern banking operations and set up ATMs at different places in the state.
Sops election stunt: Bhattal
Chandigarh: Alleging there was no financial benefit in the state governments recent measures,Punjab Congress legislature party leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal termed the sops offered by the SAD-BJP government,as a mere election stunt. Bhattal said increasing the remuneration for Nambardars from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 and Sarpanches from Rs 600 to 1,200 was similar to offering them peanuts. Keeping in view inflation,it should have been increased to Rs 5,000,she said. Similarly old age and widow pensions should also be hiked,she added.
Officials visit Kapurthala jail
Kapurthala: After the bloody clash at Kapurthala Central Jail on Friday,IG Jail Jagjit Singh,District Session Judge MS Virdi and Chief Judicial Magistrate visited the prison on Saturday to take stock of events. Three cops and six jail inmates were seriously injured in the clash. The officials had conversations with jail staff and inmates to ascertain the cause of the violence.
