As Monday was the last day for campaigning for the Students’ Council elections at Panjab University (PU), supporters of all student organisations campaigned extensively.
Rallies were conducted by the three major parties on the PU premises, and the supporters appealed to the voters in person. Wearing colorful scarves and stickers supporting their parties and waving party flags, around 800 to 1,200 supporters of various parties went around the university campus, asking for votes in their favour.

Students could also be seen campaigning in the university hostels. The students were allowed to campaign till 9 pm in the boys’ hostels, and till 7 pm in the girls’ hostels.
According to Chairman of Youth Organisation of India (YOI), Balvinder Singh, “All the student parties have been working day and night for the last one month, and it all comes to an end today. Now it is the voters who will decide the fate of Panjab University.”
Members of Students For Society (SFS) organised a play at the Students’ Centre, explaining how all student organisations at PU were in some way or the other politically backed. Despite having a presidential woman candidate in last year’s students’ elections, SFS is not contesting for the elections this year. Members of the group claim that they just want to work for the welfare of students, and do not wish to be in power for the same.
“We have been campaigning against sexual harassment, and are now rooting for a four-wheeler-free campus,” said Amandeep Kaur, who was the presidential candidate from SFS last year.
