Koffee ghar ghar ki

Actor Vidya Balan’s thumb-sucking act in Abhishek Chaubey’s Ishqiya may have elevated the sex quotient of Hindi cinema, but her desperate attempts at recreating that scene by sucking Rani Mukherjee’s thumb in season 3 of Koffee with Karan, looked outrageous and as some said, not very dignified.

Nor was Saif Ali Khan’s response “Reliable,Strong and Long”,when KJo asked him what would be his tagline if he ever endorsed a product. Kareena Kapoor looked away innocently but few missed the thrill that coursed through her eyes. Koffee With Karan,as critics have noted,is the new confessional chamber of Bollywood, showing B-town celebrities for what they really are. A bunch of ambitious, brash and cheeky people,as prone to self praise as to the criticism of their colleagues. It is the new rogue’s gallery, where the one who speaks most unguardedly notches maximum points. Dry humour, instant wit,self-praise and a bit of sexy banter — they allow it all to hang out. “People in the entertainment business appear on chat shows like these only to reaffirm their existence in the industry. It is all about image creation,” says director Mahesh Bhatt. That hits the nail on the head.

“Slander is now legitimate,” believes Bhatt. Ad-man Alyque Padamsee says,“The film industry is now more competitive than it was and bitching is a part of it. It’s bound to happen,” he says. With dirty linen laundered openly,KJo’s dhobi ghat is the hotbed of a public display of lack of affection. Remember the shocking suds, don’t you? Deepika Padukone suggested that former boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor should endorse condoms and the three-flops down Sonam Kapoor, dissed Bollywood’s fashion sense. Kareena Kapoor snarled at Priyanka Chopra’s accent,Suzanne Roshan hinted at bedroom secrets and almost all guests on the gossip couch made fun of Ram Gopal Verma. Padamsee is right when he says,“I have also realised that this season, the women are more outspoken than men.”

Karan Johar’s strategy is transparent now. He comes armed with a one-point agenda in every episode. If you zoom back,he has had an agenda every season. On the one side are his favourites and on the other are those who he urges others to “decently berate.” If Rakhi Sawant was his punching bag in Season 1 and Mallika Sherawat after,it is Ram Gopal Verma now. Then it is about people’s love lives. After quizzing Priyanka Chopra about her affairs,he did not forget to throw in a rosy barb about her no longer finding Shahid Kapoor’s body an enigma. He questioned Padukone about Siddharth Mallya and pressed the ‘lie-o-meter’ at Balan when she refuted all rumours.

Karan asks these questions happily, blatantly, knowing he wouldn’t get the most desirable answer but can at least leave viewers guessing. Celebrities have also realised that this is a good platform to play to the gallery. They can not only promote their own films, but give it back to those who were nasty about them. Each gets a vicarious turn. Winners or losers, they start glowing when they answer Karan, reveling in the attention of the camera.

“Karan is fun and makes everybody feel very comfortable and he uses this gift on the show. He hasn’t changed at all from season one,” says director Farah Khan, also Johar’s close friend. That’s the problem. His friends are unable to critique him. No wonder, his guest list boasts of A-listers. The rest are brought in to balance the act but they end up looking like props. Done with bitching about Rakhi Sawant,Johar went on to invite her to the show as if she had finally entered the ‘circuit’. She admits as much. “People who want to work with Karan Johar,go on the show. He is a big director before being anyone’s friend,” says Sawant, who was his guest in season two and wants to be back on the couch.

Sawant isn’t the only one. Saurabh Yagnik GM and Senior Vice-president,Star World confirms that the advertisers are happy as are the viewers. “This show makes for 20-25 per cent TRPs for the channel,” adds Yagnik. The much fought for hamper (see box) is another little seducer sitting slyly on Karan’s side. Yagnik denies that it has goodies from advertisers. “They are all Karan’s guests and he gives them whatever he wishes to,” he says.

It’s all about loving your friends like family,Karan would quip. Kahani ghar ghar ki…?
