Eleven days after busting an inter-state gang of smugglers and their Pakistani connections, the district police came to know that the brother of arrested Border Security Force (BSF) personnel Prem Singh is presently languishing in jail for smuggling drugs.

BSF personnel Prem Singh was arrested on January 12 for allegedly assisting notorious smuggler Gurjant Singh alias Bholu and his gang in smuggling drug consignments from Pakistan.

According to sources, Prem Singh told the police that his brother Satnam Singh was arrested by the Tarn Taran district police around one-and-a-half years ago in connection with smuggling drugs. The sources revealed that an FIR was lodged against Satnam at Sarain Amanat Khan police station and he has been in jail for the last one year.

“We are now investigating whether Prem Singh ever helped smugglers apart from Bholu or not,” said a police officer who wished not to be named.

Meanwhile, the district police team again questioned the panchayat members of Bandala village in Jalandhar district in connection with Bholu’s passport. The panchayat members who were in power in 2011 had managed to get his passport prepared on the village address and on the name of Gagandeep Singh. The police, however, said that it was still unclear as to how the passport was verified.

“Generally two respectable people are asked to go to the police station concerned to identify the person who is to be verified. The people could either be nambardaars or panchayat members. Although we have the names of the people, we will take some time to clear the confusion,” said a police officer.

Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that they were verifying the antecedents of Prem Singh and his family members.
He added that some more arrests were imminent.
