Chacha Nehru,Hind Ke Chacha Nehru,Sare Jag Ke Chacha Nehru…Barinder Kaurs face lights up like a child as she recites the poem she had penned almost six decades ago at school. Not a word forgotten,71-year-old Kaur goes back to her school days as she relives the special moment, when on the occasion of Jawaharlal Nehrus birthday, students were asked to write a few lines for Nehruji.
I wrote a full-fledged poem. The school authorities sent that poem to Nehruji and I received an appreciation letter from him, which gave my flair and passion for writing such a big boost, Kaur says at the release of her first poetry book in Hindi titled Mere Sapne.
Published by 5aab Prakashan,Jalandhar, the book was released on Thursday at the Press Club by poet and lyricist Sardar Anjum.
Writing ever since she received the letter from Nehru,Kaur says her work as a teacher and raising a family left her little time to pursue her passion until retirement, when she decided to completely dedicate her time and energy to poetry.
Mere Sapne has 32 poems based on nature and life at Chail, where she worked for 24 years as the hostel in-charge at Military School. Kaur has dedicated the book to her husband late Baljit Singh. He was a wonderful artist, one who continuously tried to fulfill and support all my dreams. I will always pester him to make a painting that will depict my poems and he will always give me some excuse or the other. So,I have written a poem for him titled Ek Tasveer in which I express my anger at him for not painting my poetry, says Kaur.
While earlier Kaur used to write in Punjabi,it is Hindi that she has chosen to express her thoughts and emotions this time. Written in a simple language, the poet weaves words of Punjabi effortlessly into the poems, without disturbing the smooth flow of verses.
My inspiration comes from Guru Granth Sahib and I write about the beauty that surrounds me in Chail, the simple people, the quiet life, love, freedom, laughter, rivers, flowers, trees…nature gives us everything,we just have to acknowledge its blessings. Some verses are reflective, others are joyous, some words inspire, other lines indicate pathos…In between the lines, you will read the history of India and also feel an echo of Sufism…It is a fulfilling experience to see my work in print and I have 35 new poems ready and cant wait to see them published, she adds.
