Kandi gets its first polytechnic college

Technical education in Kandi, one of the most backward regions in Hoshiarpur district, received a boost on Sunday when approval was given to set up a government polytechnic college.

The All India Technical Education (AICTE), the governing body for technical education, approved the proposal. Most of the infrastructure for the college is already in place, while the process of recruitment of faculty is ongoing. The college is located in Talwara area under Mukerian Sub division.

With this institute, people of the area will now have technical education closer home rather than having to travel to colleges in neighbouring districts or the one in Hoshiarpur, nearly 80km from Kandi.

As per available information, the institute will offer five courses – computer engineering, electronics and communication engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering with 60 seats in each.

The number of courses may increase in the future. “We already started the admission process. Many candidates have already applied to us. The final list will be prepared once the class 10 results are declared in the coming months,” said Narinder Singh, in-charge principal of the college.

The 5.5-acre college campus was built at cost of around Rs 20 crore. Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal had announced the college four years ago in a Sangat Darshan programme in Talwara.

“Earlier we would hesitate to send our children, especially girls, to places far away to take up such courses,” said R K Gupta, a resident of Talwara and father of an aspirant. He feels the college will be a boon to students here.
