Four years after it was constructed, the Entrepreneur Development Centre (EDC) at the Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park will finally be opened. The UT Administration has received the No Objection Certificate from the Fire Department, which was the last hurdle in making the building functional. The entrepreneurs have been given the go-ahead for opening their offices by next week.

A total of 10 entrepreneurs have been selected for setting up their offices here. Proposals had earlier been invited by the Administration and given approval after presentations were made. The delay was caused over the past several years due to the indecision of the Administration on how the space would be allotted and the rates to be charged.

Secretary IT Prerna Puri said that all hurdles have been cleared and that the EDC is ready to be opened. “The entrepreneurs have been told to take possession of the offices. The setting up of the EDC will be beneficial for the region and will give the IT sector a boost,” she said.

EDC has been funded by the UT Administration and the central government through the Assistance to States for Developing Export Infrastructure and Other Allied Activities Scheme (ASIDE). The four-storey EDC building is spread over an area of 1.5 acres and has been built at a cost of about Rs 18 crore.

The EDC building was completed in 2009. The aim was to provide a built-up incubation space to the budding entrepreneurs and small- and medium-sized information technology companies for software creation, research and development and other high-value services.

It is designed to be a software export centre, apart from providing readymade space to young entrepreneurs who have bright ideas but do not have the capital to create the proper infrastructure.

The IT export from the tricity is valued at around Rs 2,100 crores of which the share of Chandigarh is Rs 1,600 crore. The process of preparation of an IT policy is also going on in the Administration.
