I-T inspector caught taking bribe

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday caught an inspector of the Income Tax department when he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a hotel owner in Attawa village. The trap was laid inside the hotel.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday caught an inspector of the Income Tax department when he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a hotel owner in Attawa village. The trap was laid inside the hotel.

Inspector Shanti Kumar Sharma was caught taking Rs 10,000 from Kuldeep Goyal,owner of Royal Palace. Goyal had lodged a complaint with the CBI that the accused had threatened to open files of his income tax returns.

Late on Tuesday evening,the CBI laid a trap and caught Sharma. The accused had demanded Rs 20,000 from Goyal but agreed to take Rs 10,000,a CBI officer said.

Goyal said,”He was threatening me for many weeks. He said I should either pay the money or he would open my income tax files.” Goyal also runs a general store in Attawa village,Sector 42.

DIG (CBI) Mahesh Aggarwal said the accused was arrested by the CBI in 2007 while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000. He was convicted in the case and had filed an appeal against he verdict. “We will check if he is under suspension,” Aggarwal said.

The accused will be produced in court on Wednesday.
