On Saturday afternoon, members of the ‘Qaumi Insaaf Morcha’ held a protest on the main road dividing Phase VII and Phase VIII in Mohali.
Heavy police force was deployed in the city leading to traffic congestion in various areas with the city hosting an IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punkab Kings from 4 pm.
The morcha is staging the protest demanding the release of Sikh prisoners who have completed their jail terms in terror-related cases since January 7. It had given the call for the protest on March 28 after accusing the state government of not fulfilling its demands including justice in the sacrilege cases and shifting Beant Singh murder case convict Jagtar Singh Hawara to a prison in Punjab.
The focus of the ‘Qaumi Insaf Morcha’ is the nine prisoners who have completed 15 to 31 years in jail compared to life-sentence prisoners who spend only 14 years behind bars.
The morcha chose to hold the protest on Saturday in view of the IPL match. The protest venue is around 2.5 km from the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Phase IX.
Meanwhile, the police cordoned off the area around the protest venue and stopped the agitators just before the Main Light Point in Phase VII. The police blocked the way by parking tipper trucks and bullet proof tractors across the road.
