An international conference on “NMR at the interface of Physics,Chemistry, and Biology” was organised by the

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER),Mohali,at its its transit campus in the MGSIPAP Complex,Sector 26,Chandigarh,Monday.

IISER Director Prof N. Sathyamurthy informed the participants about the progress made by the institute thus far. He mentioned that exciting research results were emerging from the newly established cutting-edge research facilities such as two high-resolution NMR spectrometers (400MHz and 600MHz),single-crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers, laser Raman and NSOM facility, which were fully functional at the IISER Mohali’s new campus in Sector 81.

He announced that the institute will shift into its new campus in Mohali next month. Keynote address was given by Prof Anil Kumar from the Indian Institute of Science (IIS),Bangalore,on “Quantum Information Processing by NMR: Status and Challenges”.

Prof Kumar,a pioneer in the field of NMR spectroscopy, has the unique distinction of having worked with and contributed to the Nobel-prize winning work of two Nobel Laureates. Prof Kumar,in his lecture, talked about the newly emergent field of Quantum Computing and how to build a physical quantum computer using NMR techniques.

A number of distinguished scientists from different countries, including USA,Australia,France,Germany and Slovenia, and from premier institutions in India like IIS,Bangalore; TIFR,Mumbai; AIIMS,New Delhi and IIT,Chennai; are participating in the conference and will deliver invited lectures. A number of PhD scholars and MS students from IISER,Mohali, and nearby institutions will attend the lectures.

IISER Mohali is one of five new inter-disciplinary research institutes, established in 2007 by the Union government to perform cutting-edge research combined with quality undergraduate and graduate science education.
