A 27-year-old Dilbagh Singh of Sardarpura village near Lalru was electrocuted when he came in contact with an air-conditioner panel outside an ATM booth in Lalru on Tuesday afternoon. His body remained lying outside the ATM booth for couple of hours in the heavy rain till the police shifted it to the hospital. Medium to heavy rains which lashed the area leading to a sharp fall in the mercury since Monday, brought misery for the residents of Mohali and Kharar. The choked and almost non-existent drainage system left major parts of the twin towns inundated under knee-deep water. Office-goers were the worst-hit as heavy showers continued on Tuesday morning.

Residents in major parts of Kharar spent Monday night and Tuesday without power supply, which was suspended at 11 pm on Monday and restored at 1.30 pm on Tuesday. In Mohali Phase VII,power supply remained suspended from Monday midnight to 10 am Tuesday.

The downpour, which began on Monday evening, continued at medium to high speed till around 5 pm Tuesday, paralysing normal life. The day temperature also dipped considerably, giving the much needed respite from the sultry weather. According to the weather department,Mohali recorded over 80 mm of rain.

The busy stretch of National Highway-21 in Kharar was flooded due as the natural flow of water was blocked near Quila Complex. The high flow of gushing waters over the highway not only left several vehicles stranded but also caused major disruption in the free flow of vehicular traffic, which moved at snail’s pace in serpentine queues. It was only after a JCB machine was called to make way that the accumulated water started flowing.

Similarly, the main road from Mohali to Landran-via-Sohana was filled with water for hours near Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan in Sohan. At Kharar bus stand, commuters had to wade through 2-3 feet deep water to board a bus. Several buses and other vehicles also got trapped in the deep and wide potholes filled with water posing danger to the heavy traffic. In Mohali, majority of the inner roads and parking lots turned into pools of water with the road gullies and curb channels filled with wild growth. The rainwater also accumulated in various residential and commercial areas in Phase 3B1,3B2,4,7,8,9,10,11,1,2 and Sector 68,69,70 and 71. A road dividing Sector 71-Phase 3B2 also remained submerged under knee-deep water.

Reports of water-logging and over-flooded streets and roads were also received from Zirakpur and Dera Bassi.

However,Mohali and Kharar SDMs RPS Walia and Rajeev Gupta, respectively, confirmed no loss of life or property till the reports last came in.
