It’s a huge feat, especially for the Deols. Not only has the most media-shy family brought down the walls, they have made one of the wisest decisions of the year: sell well. There are lines,of course. One is instructed not to ask personal questions or anything related to family matters. That said, with Yamla Pagla Deewana, the Deols have perfected the art of marketing, starting with very release date of the film which marks Dharmendra’s 50 years in the industry. The film, which hits the theatres on January 14,will do so with maximum prints (100 alone in Punjab and 250 worldwide). In Chandigarh for the promotion of YMD at Hotel Mount View and later,at PVR cinemas,Central Mall, the three — Dharmendra,Sunny and Bobby—¿ make little confessions and big announcements.

“Apne was a lesson in marketing. It taught us how important promotion is and, hence, the reason you are seeing us out and about on every channel, every show, for that’s what people want,” say the three. A ‘muscular comedy’ as Dharamji calls it,this one, according to trade pundits,is already a hit (the promos had highest internet hits) before the release. “Apne was an emotional film which made people cry. Now,it’s time to make people laugh,” says Dharmendra, who, according to son Sunny Deol, was not convinced with the film at first.

“I always listen to a script like a cinegoer, visualise i— ¿ whether people will like it or n—t ¿ for I don’t believe in making it too predictable or unnecessarily boring. For instance, had Bobby got the girl in Dillagi, the film would’ve been a hit,” says Deol senior who feels Sunny’s the emotional, deep actor while Bobby’s a bad businessman. The sons, however, managed to convince him,for “we wanted the film to mark papa’s 50 years in the industry and we wanted to start and finish it in time,” say Sunny and Bobby.

Three years after Apne, the Deols return to the silver screen with one of the most hyped films of 2011. Titled Double Trouble, and also Trouble Shrouble earlier,Dharmendra made it into Triple Trouble and coined the title Yamla Pagla Deewana in jest. “It’s from the song Main Jatt Yamla Pagla Deewana from my film Pratigya and it suited the characters of the film. With YMD,we also wanted to break away from this hardcore macho hero image associated with us,” says Dharamji, playing the original Yamla Jatt, while Bobby’s a clueless Pagla and Sunny the Deewana in search of these two thugs of Benaras. “Bobby and I are buddies, like Jai and Veeru and Sunny is my lost son,” Dharamji gives a sneak peak into the film that travels from Canada to Benaras to Punjab along with Nafisa Ali,Emma Brown Garrett and the city’s very own Kulraj Randhawa.

While Sunny has his hands full, with a romantic comedy starring Kangana and Naveen Andrews and another one directed by Dr Chandraprakash Diwedi in which he plays a Sanskrit teacher,Bobby will be seen in Anees Bazmi’s Thank You and Abbas-Mustan’s Players. As for Dharmendra, the legend announces that fans will certainly see more of him.

“50 years is a long time but I am raring to go. I consciously strayed away from cinema for I wasn’t getting the kind of roles I wanted. I couldn’t relate to any of them but now I am back, and I won’t stay quiet. It took time for me to come out of this self-imposed exile but you will see a lot of me,” says the actor who is all set to work on a book of poems penned by him,and even picturise them.

Quiz them on whether the Deols will come together post YPD and all three are positive. “It’s the time of sequels, and there will be a Part Two for sure,” assures Sunny while Dharamji wraps it up: “I used to be in awe seeing Raj Kapoor and Prithvi Raj Kapoor, his father, act together…I always wanted that with my sons, and when we are together,it’s perfect. We complete each other.”
