Three arrested for robbery
Chandigarh: The police on Saturday arrested three persons who used to commit robberies in the city and claimed to have solved four cases with their arrest. The police arrested Vishal,Rohit and Pankaj from Malloya and recovered a stolen auto-rickshaw and number of mobile phones from their possession. While explaining their modus operandi,the police said the accused used to target passengers who used to hire their autorickshaw and then rob him at knife point after taking them to a secluded place. They were produced in court today and remanded to police custody.

Two decomposed bodies found
PANCHKULA: Badly decomposed bodies of a 20-year-old woman and her six-month-old son were found from the bushes in Rampur Suidei village near Surajpur on the Panchkula-Kalka highway on Saturday. Children playing in the area noticed the bodies and informed the police. The bodies have been sent for postmortem to the Sector-6 General Hospital.

Kharar goes without power yet again
KHARAR: The residents of Kharar were in for another powerless day on Saturday when the power supply remained suspended without any prior notice for almost the entire day and was not restored till the filing of this report past 8 pm. The first power cut was imposed from 7.30 am to 10 am but the power supply again went off at 12 noon and was not restored for rest of the day. Without power supply,the drinking water supply also remained suspended and in the process. Kharar PSEB SDE Satwant Singh attributed the power shutdown to the removal of electricity poles from the way of four-laning of National Highway-21 in Kharar. However,this time also he did not bothered to issue any prior public notice about the scheduled work as he was doing in the past. At 8 pm,he said the work was in progress and power supply would be restored on its completion,which he was unsure of how much more time it would take. Meanwhile,the Citizens’ Welfare Council has urged the PSEB Chairman to review the working of Kharar PSEB officials and improve the deteriorating power supply situation in Kharar. “Even in winter,the residents were facing daylong unscheduled power cuts. What would be the situation in summer,” said Council chairman Dr Pawan Kumar Jain.

Martyrs’ Day observed
CHANDIGARH: To mark the Martyrdom Day of Mahatma Gandhi,members of Yuvsatta,Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti and students of the Peace Club of Government Senior Secondary School,Sector 26,organized inter-college and inter-school competitions on the school premises today. Around 15 colleges and schools participated in the event. Students made collages with pictures of the Mahatma to spread the message of communal harmony.

Mahatma Gandhi remembered on death anniversary
Ambala: Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi and others,who laid down their lives during the freedom struggle,were remembered and rich tributes were paid to them at different functions organised in the district to mark his death anniversary on Saturday. Representatives of all Congress wings and functionaries gathered at the Congress Bhawans Ambala Cantt and Ambala City where tributes were paid by the leaders. DCC president N S Shera,Zila Parishad chairman Brahmpal Rana and others spoke on the occasion. Reports of similar meetings were received from Naraingarh,Brara and other stations where the martyrs were remembered.

Man kills wife in Ambala
Ambala: A man allegedly killed his wife by throwing her in a canal after 18 days of their wedding. He had demanded Rs 1.5 lakh as dowry. Since the demand was not fulfilled,he killed her. The body was recovered from the canal clad in the wedding dress. The deceased has been identified as Manpreet Kaur and the accused Harvinder. The police took action on the complaint of Naib Singh,father of Manpreet,a resident of Hiranagar Ambala City. He had alleged Harvinder,along with his cousin Kalu,had killed his daughter and her dead body was recovered from the canal. He alleged Harvinder had an argument with him on the issue of dowry and cash and had left his house in anger. He further alleged during her visits after marriage,Manpreet had complained of ill-treatment and had said Harvinder had an affair with some other girl. The police arrested Harvinder and Kalu.

DGP asks GRP to be polite with public
Ambala: Taking a serious note of the inefficient working of the Government Railway Police,Haryana DGP Ranjiv Dalal asked them to be polite with the public and be helpful to those who approached them. Dalal was interacting with the media after laying the foundation stone of the GRP Police Station at Ambala Cantonment on Saturday. He regretted the number of untraced cases with the GRP had risen to 1,800,while the number of such cases was very less with the district police. The present situation,he said,spoke of the working of the GRP,who remained involved in the territorial boundaries whenever an incident occurred around the railway tracks. The DGP advised the GRP personnel not to worry about the increase in the number of cases if they registered these. He said they should be honest in their working in redressing the grievances of the people.

Annual function of Banyan Tree School held
CHANDIGARH: The Banyan Tree School,Sector 48,celebrated its annual function at Tagore Theatre on Friday evening. D R Yadav,CBSE joint secretary,Panchkula region,was the chief guest on the occasion. The programme was in the form of a ballet titled Vasundhra ki Gatha,depicting how the youth have to shoulder the responsibility of taking care of the Earth. The show started with the song by the tiny tots and moved on to classical dances,folk dances and a skit. The programme concluded with a prize distribution ceremony and a note of thanks by the students.
