Govt confirms 34 jaundice cases
SHIMLA: The health department finally got together the count of jaundice patients reported to government hospitals in the last 20 days and listed 34 cases. There are,however,chances of increase in the number. Surveillance Officer of IDSP,Dr Vinod Mehta,said four fresh cases were reported on Wednesday,all from Vikas Nagar area. We are still waiting for the results of 10 water samples taken by us for tests. Any conclusion over an outbreak can be drawn only after that, he said. Looking at the large number of cases coming from Vikas Nagar and Dev Nagar pocket that do not have a sewerage disposal line network,the health department has constituted a team to survey the supply network of Ashwani Khud drinking water scheme and check for leakage or possible contamination points,said Mehta.
Activists protest against industrial package
SHIMLA: Environment activists and voluntary action groups from the areas affected by industrial upsurge in Solan district voiced their views against any extension to the Central industrial package. They urged the Centre to grant such assistance to only non-polluting and small cottage industries in the rural areas of Himachal. In a protest staged in Nalagarh against the Jaypees cement grinding unit commissioned at Tikri,people demanded an end to the further expansion of large industrial unit.
AMRITSAR: Rajwant Kaur,a resident of Lahuka village near Patti in Tarn Taran district,was arrested on Wednesday for killing her infant daughter. Her husband wanted to give away the one-month old child to a relative who did not have any children of their own,but she was against the decision. To put an end to the issue,she strangulated the baby and threw her body in a heap of garbage. Her husband Gurbachan Singh informed the police and a case was registered against her.
Bajwa condemns attacks on Indians students
AMRITSAR: Congress MP from Gurdaspur Partap Singh Bajwa condemned the attacks on Indian students in Australia. He said Indians were being singled out and demanded the Australia administration to act against those behind the racial attacks. While addressing mediapersons,he said,”A large number of Indian students have gone to Australia and contributed to the countrys economy. The Australian Government should realise its responsibility to provide safety and security to them.”
KSC rejects Sukhbir-Kalia report
AMRITSAR:The Kisan Sangarsh Committee (KSC) rejected the proposals of the two-member cabinet committee,which has recommended the cutting down of sops to farmers. “The farmers have to suffer due to corruption and this would only increase their problems,” said KSC spokesperson Harjit Singh Nurdi. He also demanded the release of bonus allowances on paddy,which is yet to be paid to the farmers.
Vedic way of life still relevant: experts
AMRITSAR: At a seminar organised at DAV College,it was concluded that the traditional vedic way of life is still relevant and its contribution to the society and education must be stressed in the present times. They also emphasised on propagating the teachings of Swami Dayanand. Principal of the college Dr Satish Kumar Sharma said the contributions of Maharishi Dayanand towards nation were exemplary.Dr Harmahinder Singh Bedi said Swamis ideas on women empowerment,world peace and sociological peace paved the way for the new society.
Former Congman gets jail for bigamy
Chandigarh: A lower court today convicted former Congress leader Tara Singh Sandhu of charges of bigamy and dowry harassment. The court of Additional chief Judicial Magistrate Anshul Berry today sentenced Sandhu to rigorous imprisonment of one year and six months and a fine of Rs 2,000.
The case dates back to 2004 when Sandhu was booked on his wife Kamaljit Kaurs complaint and a case was registered in the Sector-26 police station. The wife of accused,who is a lecturer in Government College,Sector 11,had said in her complaint that she was being harassed for dowry.
It was also alleged that Sandhu,who is also a writer,got married to Bhupinder Kaur in 2003 while his divorce case with his first wife was pending in court. The police field a chargesheet in the case in November 2004 while charges were framed against Sandhu on August 10,2005.
Day 3: Flights remain grounded
CHANDIGARH: For the third consecutive day,all flights remained grounded at the Chandigarh Airport on Wednesday. Trains were also affected due to poor visibility in the morning and evening. The New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi arrived in the city at 1 pm against its scheduled time of 11.05 am. The Howrah Mail arrived at 7.30 am against its scheduled time of 3.30 am. The Himalayan Queen Express arrived one hour late and Sadhbhavna Express was delayed by four hours against its scheduled time of 10.15 am.

BSNL waives off installation charges
CHANDIGARH: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has waived off the installation charges for broadband and landline customers for a limited period. Customers can book landline connections by depositing Rs 250 instead of Rs 500 as instrument charges (for the customers who have their own telephone sets this amount will be adjusted in the first bill).
23 armymen get Sena Medal
CHANDIGARH: Lieutenant General Shankar Ranjan Ghosh,GOC-in-C,Western Command,gave away the prestigious Sena Medal to 23 individuals out of which four awards were given posthumously during an investiture ceremony held at Pathankot today. Two Veer Naris and two mothers of the martyrs received the awards which were awarded posthumously. Bulbul Ghosh,President,AWWA,Western Command,felicitated them after the ceremony. Major Sanjay Kandwal and Naik Sate Singh received gallantry awards for putting up the highest order of bravery during 26/11 at Hotel Taj in Mumbai.
250 poor children medically examined
CHANDIGARH: Aid was given to the children with special needs at a function organised by the UT Education Department at the Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 18 on Wednesday. Jean Rodrigues,president,Indian Council for Child Welfare,was the chief guest on the occasion. She distributed wheel chairs,tricycles,hearing aids,blind sticks and crutches to the children with special needs. She also distributed sweaters to over 100 children enrolled in the Alternative Innovative Education centres. Medical teams comprising orthopaedic and ENT specialists from GMSH-16,GMCH- 32 and team from Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India conducted medical examination of around 250 children suspected to be having moderate to profound degree of impairment with orthopaedic,visual and hearing problems to provide essential aid.

Residents of Institute for the Blind take out rally
Chandigarh: BEAUTY need not be appreciated only through sight; it can be felt as well as smelt. This was the message that residents of the Institute for the Blind,Sector 26,spread during a rally held on Wednesday. The rally was organised by the Medical Officer of Health,Municipal Corporation,under the Partnership Initiative Programme. Students also propagated the message of keeping the city clean. The rally was flagged off by area councillor Sarita Sharma in the presence of principal K R Sood. The students appealed that everyone should join the campaign for maintaining sanitation to keep the status of City Beautiful intact. Sweets were distributed as a token of appreciation.
Missing realtor case: 8 months on,Panchkula police still clueless
CHANDIGARH: Even though eight months have passed,the Panchkula police have failed to trace missing property dealer,Deepak Rai Saggar. His son Sameer addressed a press conference at the Chandigarh Press Club on Wednesday. Saggar had gone missing along with his black Skoda car on June 1 last year. It has been eight months now,but the police has failed to get any clue in the case. Even meeting Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for almost ten times has led to no result, said Sameer. He added,While the main suspects in the case are still roaming freely,we feel a threat to our lives. There have been several times when we have been followed by some unknown persons. The Saggar family had also moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court asking for the transfer of the case from the Panchkula police to CBI. The next hearing in the case is on January 22.
BJP plans to hold separate winter session
AMBALA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed concern over not holding the winter session of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha by the state government headed by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. After recent Assembly elections,only a days session was convened because the Congress government was apprehensive of its fall and all business was carried out hurriedly to avoid facing the Opposition, said Haryana BJP Legislature Party leader Anil Vij at a press conference on Wednesday. He also asked the government to convene the session within 15 days or his party in collaboration with other parties would hold the session where all MLAs would be invited to take part. Vij said the financial position of the state was deplorable and was required to be discussed on top priority. He added that he would speak to INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala and HJC President Kuldip Bishnoi with regard to holding of the session. In reply to a question,he said the session would either be held at Chandigarh or Ambala.
Rita Jaspal is new president of IMA state unit
AMBALA: Local medical practitioner Dr Rita Jaspal was unanimously elected the president of the Haryana unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at the annual meeting on Wednesday. Dr Praveen Arora of Sirsa was elected senior vice-president while Anil Aggarwal from Ambala Cantonment was named vice-president. Dr Jaspal was earlier chairperson of the Women Cell. Jaspal said she would work towards better patient-doctor relations to provide medical care to all at reasonable prices and free treatment to the needy.
Two purses snatched in Panchkula
Panchkula: Two cases of snatching were reported from the city on Wednesday. Around noon,when Rajni Gupta,a resident of Sector 11,left her home,an unidentified youth on an Activa scooter snatched her purse and fled the spot. According to the complaint,her purse contained gold ornaments,a cell phone besides Rs 3,000, said a police officer. Within a few minutes of the incident,the purse of one Manpreet Kaur,a resident of Abhyapur village,was also snatched near Amartex Chowk. Kaur said she lost Rs 200 and a necklace. The police have registered cases.
