No-confidence motion against Dera Bassi MC chief fails to get support
DERA BASSI: A no-confidence motion against Dera Bassi Municipal Council president Manjeet Kaur Dally failed to get enough supporters at a special MC meeting held here on Wednesday. The opposition group of councillors in the MC had moved a no-confidence motion against Dally in June but the meeting was called today. MC Executive Officer Bhushan Jain said that against the requirement of at least 9 votes in the MC House of the total 13 elected municipal councillors, the opposition garnered the support of 8 councillors whereas the remaining 5 councillors, including the MC president, voted against the motion. Local MLA Jasjit Singh Bunny, who being an ex-officio member has a voting right, was, however, conspicuous by his absence. On June 30,eight municipal councillors, including two each from SAD and BJP,one from Congress and three Independent councillors had moved a no-confidence motion against the civic body president. MC vice-president Seema Sharma (BJP) along with municipal councillors Hari Om Dhiman (SAD),Tara Chand (SAD),Ajmer Kaur (BJP),Geeta Jain (Congress),Ranjana Saini (Independent),Anita Dhiman (Independent) and Vipin Thaman (Independent) had signed the requisition to call a special meeting on the no-confidence motion. The opposition councilllors alleged that the MC president resides in Chandigarh and lacks knowledge about the local requirements of Dera Bassi due to which development in the area was badly affected. Late Punjab Minister and local MLA Captain Kanwaljit Singh had been instrumental in appointing Dally as the MC chief against the wishes of a majority of the councillors even from the SAD-BJP combine.
