Motorcyclist dies in accident
CHANDIGARH:A resident of Sector 29 died in a hit-and-run accident late on Friday night. Ranjeet Singh was rushed to GMCH-32 but succumbed to his injuries there. An employee of Ordinance Cable Factory,Ranjeet was returning home when the accident took place. The 50-year-old is survived by his wife and a daughter and son. Pillion rider Ved Parkash received minor injuries. A case under Section 279/304-A of the IPC has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.
Rotary Club organises medical camp in Sarangpur
CHANDIGARH:A free medical camp was organised at the rural polyclinic in Sarangpur on Saturday by the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown. Eye,medical,dermatology,dental and surgical specialists examined the patients. Nearly 250 people from Sarangpur and nearby villages were checked. Free medicines and spectacles were given to needy patients. President Deep Gurdeep Singh and other members of the club were also present. Brigadier ML Kataria,a philanthropist who runs free dispensaries in the city,inaugurated the camp.
CHANDIGARH:In a written representation submitted to the Director Public Instructions (Schools) on Saturday,the Government Teachers Union has opposed the Administrations decision to transfer male teachers from girls schools in the city. The union stated that the entire teaching community should not be brought under the scanner if the conduct of a few persons is questionable. Claiming that the move has hurt the dignity of teachers,the union demanded that the transfer be stopped immediately as it would affect academics and also teacher-student ties. The Education department,meanwhile,assured of action in the matter.
PGI doctors get fellowships
CHANDIGARH:Professor K L Gupta from the Department of Nephrology and Dr Pratibha Singhi of the Department of Paediatrics,PGIMER,have been awarded fellowships from the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The awards were presented at a ceremony held at Lucknow on Saturday. Dr Gupta has been awarded for his contribution in highlighting the high incidence of angio-invasive fungal infections of kidneys in cases of renal transplant. Meanwhile,Dr Singhi is the honorary consultant in-charge of Prayas – the rehabilitation centre for disabled children in Chandigarh. She has also been a consultant paediatric neurologist at The Great Ormond Street Hospital,London,UK. She has also received several other prestigious fellowships.
Paediatric neurology and epilepsy conference begins
Chandigarh:The International Pediatric Neurology and Epilepsy Conference at PGI entered its second day on Saturday with the experts throwing light on a number of neurological and epileptic disorders affecting children. The day commenced with experts Professor H Cross from the UK and Professor Ingrid Scheffer from Australia who discussed the difficulties faced in controlling epilepsy. They highlighted the recent advances in the management of this complicated disorder by techniques like epilepsy surgery,ketogenic diet and new drugs. The plenary talks of the day were delivered by Professor H Cross,who is a pioneer in the field of pediatric epilepsy.
Woman commits suicide
CHANDIGARH:A resident of Dhanas allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on Saturday. The victim,Parampreet Kaur,was reportedly suffering from severe depression as she was childless,the police said. She got married 10 years ago. Her husband was away in office when Kaur took the extreme step at her residence. No suicide note was found. The police have initiated inquest proceedings.
Minor boy falls to death
CHANDIGARH:A 13-year old boy died after falling from the stairs of his house in Sector 35 on Friday night. Ajay is a student of Class IV. He was rushed to a Sector-16 hospital but succumbed to his injuries later.
Second-hand car market to function from Sector 7
Chandigarh:The second-hand car market will function from its usual spot in Sector 7 this Sunday. The car dealers met the Finance Secretary on Friday and asked for permission to continue holding the market there for another week. The dealers had been asked to shift to a new location in Industrial Area from November 1. The car market is held every Sunday in the parking lot of the Sector-7 market.
Gang of thieves busted in Rajpura,9 arrested
RAJPURA:The Rajpura police claimed to have cracked several theft cases with the arrest of nine gangsters late on Friday night while they were planning a robbery at the Bhakhra canal in Ghanuar. Illegal arms were also recovered from their possession. The accused were booked under various sections of the IPC and Arms Act.
Women journalists conference on Monday
CHANDIGARH:The Chandigarh Journalists Association is organising the second women journalists conference at the Chandigarh Press Club on Monday. Affiliated to the National Journalists Association,the meet will be discussing the challenges being faced by women journalists in their professional and personal life. Union Minister for Urban Poverty Alleviation and Tourism Kumari Selja will inaugurate the conference while Rajya Sabha member Viplove Thakur will be the guest of honour. President of the National Union of Journalists P K Roy will preside over the conference. MP Bhiwani Shruti Chaudhary has been invited as the guest of honour for the second session. Haresh Vashishth,president of Chandigarh Journalists Association,said that more than 100 women journalists from across the country will participate in the conference.
Fake wheel covers of Mercedes Benz recovered,one arrested
PATIALA:The Patiala police have recovered fake wheel covers of Mercedes Benz worth Rs 4.5 lakh and arrested shopowner Baldev Singh of Shopp Car Mahal in Patiala. A case of cheating and fraud under Section 420 of the IPC and 23 (2) of the Trade Marks Act has been registered against Baldev. A raid was conducted by Kotwali police in collaboration with Enforcers of Intellectual Property Rights,on Shopp Car Mahal,Lower Mall Road,Patiala. Around 83 boxes of wheel covers,each containing four wheel covers,totalling up to 332 wheel covers,were seized from Baldev shop.
Bharat Kesari Award winner attacked in Dera Bassi
Dera Bassi:Bharat Kesari Award winner Jagmeet Singh,a resident of Issapur village,was allegedly attacked by three youths at Dera Bassi on Friday evening. He was rushed to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital,in a seriously injured condition,where he is undergoing treatment.
According to Jagmeet,he was standing outside a food joint in Dera Bassi when three youths suddenly attacked him with a knife. When a crowd gathered,the three fled the spot.
According to Dera Bassi Station House Officer Ranjodh Singh,the police have recorded the statement of Jagmeet and investigations are on. The three accused will soon be arrested,assured the SHO.
Jagmeet was crowned Bharat Kesari in the PL Paul-Dr MS Chopra Memorial Wrestling Tournament organised by the Chandigarh UT Wrestling Association in May this year.
