Girl commits suicide,father holds fiancé responsible
A 22-year-old girl,Sandeepa,allegedly committed suicide by slashing her wrists in Sector 7 late on Sunday night. The victim was a resident of Kasauli,Himachal Pradesh,and was staying with her fiancé Milan in a rented accommodation for the last two months. A case of suicide has been registered in the Sector-7 police post and the police is investigating the matter. According to the police,Sandeepa allegedly slashed her left wrist with a sharp-edged weapon. She was rushed to the General Hospital in Sector 6 by Milan,who is a resident of Rajpura. The doctors,however,declared her dead on arrival. The deceaseds father,Pritam,who arrived on Monday morning is a retired police officer from Himachal Pradesh. He said Sandeepa had got engaged to Milan two months ago and the two were living together since then. The victim had completed her engineering and was to shortly join an organisation at Jabli,near Solan,soon. Pritam alleged that Milan was responsible for the death of his daughter as there were scars on her neck. The body was handed over to the girls parents after postmortem.
Three die in road accident
Two persons who were critically injured in a road accident near Dhamala village on the Pinjore-Nalagarh National Highway 21-A on Sunday morning,succumbed to injuries at the General Hospital,Sector 6,on Monday. With this,the death toll has risen to three. The accident took place when deceased Irshad and Dev Raj,along with three others Abdul Qayoom,Salim and Imran were on their way to Shimla. Their Indica car,which was being driven by Dev Raj,was hit by an unidentified vehicle and the passengers sustained serious injuries. While Abdul (45) died in a hospital in Pinjore on Sunday,the remaining four were referred to General Hospital,Sector 6. As the condition of Imran and Salim deteriorated,they were referred to PGI,Chandigarh,where they are battling for life. Abdul worked as a labour contractor and was taking the three to Shimla for some work. All of them hailed from Doda district in Kashmir. The bodies were handed over to the respective families after postmortem. The police have registered a case against the driver of the unidentified vehicle.
Sood nominated as BJP city vice-president
Sanjay Tandon,president of the BJP city unit,nominated B K Sood as the vice-president on Monday. Apart from him,a list of executive members,permanent invitees to state executives and special invitees has also been finalised. Maheshinder Singh Sidhu has been named as the president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha,Mohd Khurshid Ali the president of Minority Morcha,Zorawar Singh as president of SC Morcha,Mahender Singh the president of Kisan Morcha and Asha Jaswal the president of Mahila Morcha. All BJP councillors,sarpanches,district presidents and morcha presidents have been declared ex-officio members of the state executive under the permanent invitee list.
Pushpak Society polls held
As many as seven members were elected during the polls of Pushpak Society,Sector 49,held on Monday. The members are P K Mittal,P K Sharma,Mohan Lal Mahajan,Prem Nath Sharma,Avtar Walia,Anil Lamdharia and Parmanand Sharma. Of these elected members,office-bearers of the society will be selected. The elections have been held after almost two years.
Pillion rider dies in accident
A 24-year-old old resident of Darua village,who was riding pillion on a bike,died after the two-wheeler rammed into stray cattle in Mauli Jagran late on Sunday night. The motorcycle was being driven by Ashok Kumar,victim Rajus cousin. Ashok was allegedly coming at a high speed and the streetlights on the road near Vikas Nagar were not functioning. Due to the collision,Raju fell and received grave injuries. The PCR van rushed him to the Sector-32 Government Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The police have booked Ashok Kumar on charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving under Section 304A of the IPC. He was later released on bail.
AIDS workshop held for councillors
The Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society (SACS) organised a workshop to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS among the civic body councillors on Monday. Mayor Anu Chatrath,who was the chief guest on the occasion,said HIV/AIDS has emerged as one of the biggest obstacles for social and economical development. It is important that all people in the High Risk Groups as well as pregnant women get themselves regularly checked and tested in order to prevent the spread of the disease, she said. Dr Vanita Gupta,project director,Dr Jitender Dahiya,consultant (Mainstreaming) and Dr Vandana Dewan,consultant (Voluntary Blood Donation) apprised the councillors on various high risk groups,preventive strategies,avoiding stigma and discrimination and rehabilitative measures.
Seminar on cancer held
A seminar on cancer awareness was organised at the Swift Institute of Nursing in collaboration with the Nirmal Verma Memorial Cancer Cry Care Society,Patiala,on Monday. Dr Manjit Singh Bal,professor-cum-head of the Pathology department at Rajindra Hospital,presented a lecture on myths and facts about cancer and emphasised upon early detection and prevention. Dean of Swift Institute of Nursing,Dr V K Arora and director principal Dr Raman Kalia were also present.
