Employees protest against merger of banks
On a call given by the All India Bank Employees Association and All India Bank Officers Association,a demonstration was held outside the head office of the State Bank of Patiala on Monday. While addressing the gathering,S K Gautam,secretary,All India State Bank of Patiala Employees Federation,claimed that despite assurances and commitments made in conciliation meetings that they would not pursue its merger agenda,the SBI management had proceeded with the merger with the State Bank of Indore. He added that the proposal for merger of more nationalised banks is also on the cards,which was not in the interests of the common man,as it will lead to monopoly at a time when competition is required. The union leaders threatened to observe a nation-wide strike on December 16 if the bank managements and government do not stop consolidations and mergers in public sector banks.
Prof Arvind Rajwanshi elected president of PGI Faculty Association
Professor Arvind Rajwanshi from the Department to Cytopathology has been elected as the president of the Faculty Association of PGI,in the elections held at the institute on Monday. Dr Ritesh Agarwal from Department of Pulmonary Medicine was elected as the general secretary unopposed and Dr Anish Bhattacharya from Department of Nuclear Medicine was elected unopposed as the joint secretary. Other elected members include Professor Rakesh Kochhar as vice-president and Dr Sandeep Grover as treasurer. The members elected to executive committee include Prof N Khandelwal,Prof B R Mittal,Dr Dheeraj Gupta,Dr Vikas Gautam,Dr Sameer Agarwal and Dr Satyavati Mohindra.
Immigration law in India is a neglected area, observed Chandigarh-based lawyer Ranjit Malhotra at the fourth Biennial Global Immigration Conference held in London on November 19 and 20. It is high time that the government introduced a work permit regime for foreign nationals wanting to set up businesses in the country and run offices on behalf of multi-nationals, Malhotra said. All global giants now have a presence in India. They are tapping the cheap labour market. Sadly enough,their entry is unrestricted and without a price tag. More importantly,the fees for processing work permit applications could be a source of revenue to the exchequer, he said.
Medical technology conference at PGI
The PGI Medical Technology Alumni Association organised its seventh convention on Monday on the theme Advances in medical technology and their application in laboratory and radiological sciences. PGI Director Professor K K Talwar inaugurated the convention while Maj Gen Dr Pankaj Tyagi,commandant,Western Command Hospital,Chandimandir,was the guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion,Professor Arvind Rajwanshi,Head of the Cytopathology department,PGI,stressed on strict quality control to make the institute the preferred destination for medical technology education and services.
