Ambala: Sushma Swaraj,leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha,said the Civil Liability of Nuclear Damages Bill was not acceptable to her party in its current form because certain provisions were not suitable for the interests of the country. She was expressing her views on the Bill while interacting with media on Sunday. She said the party would oppose the introduction of the Bill and would block it if the government brought it in its present form. Swaraj said that her party would support the Women’s Reservation Bill when it came for discussion in the Lok Sabha.

‘Largest’ Rotary medical camp
CHANDIGARH: In what is claimed to be the largest medical camp of its kind organised in a tribal area,a team of local Rotarians,comprising 37 doctors headed by former World President of Rotary International Rajendra K Saboo treated more than 50,000 tribals in Mandla,Madhya Pradesh. The team,which organised a seven-day camp,performed over 2,200 surgeries and treated hundreds of patients.

Rs 2 crore for schools
CHANDIGARH: Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal allocated Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) funds worth Rs 2 crore for construction of additional rooms in government schools,especially in rehabilitation colonies and villages in Chandigarh.

School organises annual day
CHANDIGARH: Aanchal International School,Sector 41,held its annual function in which a play based on today’s scenario in politics was staged. The play helped spread awareness among people on the importance of voting. The programme began with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Syndicate Bank General Manager T R V Nair,who was the chief guest.

Haryana Cabinet to expand: CM
Ambala: The Haryana Cabinet will shortly be expanded,said state Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda,while addressing the media on Sunday. He said attempts would be made to give representation to every section. In reply to a question,the chief minister said the Chatha report had been received with regard to the formation of a separate gurdwara management committee in the state. He said legal aspects of the case were being assessed and it would be implemented on the completion of legal formalities. He said the long-pending demand of giving second status to Punjabi language in the state had been fulfilled. Arrangements were being made to appoint Punjabi teachers in schools.

Youth dies in accident
Mohali: In a hit-and-run accident,a youth working in a Mohali-based call centre died when a vehicle hit him on Sunday. Twenty-year-old Vinod Kumar was returning home in Sector 7 from Mohali when the mishap took place near Attawa Chowk. In the absence of an eyewitness,the number of the vehicle could not be noted down. The victim was rushed to the Sector 16 hospital from where he was referred to the PGI. He succumbed to his injuries there,the police said. A case has been registered.

Trinamool holds protest
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh unit of the Trinamool Congress organised a demonstration at the Sector 17 Plaza against private schools for not reserving 15 per cent seats for students from economically weaker sections and three per cent for mentally challenged students. Party activists and school children led by president Shambhu Banerjee gathered at the Sector 17 plaza market in Chandigarh on Sunday with placards against schools violating directions of UT Administration.

Genetic clinic launched in city
Chandigarh: On the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day,Chaitanya Hospital announced the launch of a genetic clinic and counselling centre. Facilities would be made available to detect birth defects in babies prior to birth. Head of the Neonatology department of the hospital,Dr Anil Narang,informed the centre has been approved by the UT Administration. A genetic counsellor evaluates a couple’s family history,medical records and,if required,conducts a test to identify the possibility of having a baby with a birth defect. Dr Poonam Kumar,head of Gynaecology,said one out of every five lakh infants are born with birth defects. One in a 1000 suffer from Down’s Syndrome. Common birth defects in this region are neural tube defect,Downs’s Syndrome,thalaessemia major,congenital heart diseases,cleft lip and cleft palate. The hospital would have screening tests and diagnostic tests. Doctors suggested that in case either parent suffered from a birth defect,the test should be conducted. A treatment plan for the unborn child can then be prepared.

Programme on coping with stress held
Mohali: The Cheema Medical Complex,Phase IV,Mohali,started a mind,body and soul (MBS) programme to provide relief from stressful and competitive atmosphere. Meant for people of all age groups,the MBS will be of great benefit to children and women who are always under constant pressure. It is an initiative to help one cleanse the inner self. Hospital director,Dr Ajaiwant Cheema,said,“Children these days go through a lot of stress and pressure to perform well. Women feel depressed right from birth initially due to discrimination meted out at home,then teenage,before marriage period,immediately after marriage,pregnancy,and then post partum depression. The working woman has the Herculean task of balancing home and work that results in pressure.”

City B-school certified by Graduate Management Admission Council
Chandigarh: US-based Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) has allowed Aryans Business School (ABS) to use Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score. ABS has become first private business school in the region and 31st in the country to get a nod to use GMAT scores. With the permission to use CAT and GMAT score,the students of Chandigarh,Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir would have the choice to choose CAT and GMAT affiliated B-Schools in Chandigarh region itself and they need not to go to Mumbai,Calcutta,Ahmedabad,Delhi,Pune etc.

College convocation held in Mudhal
AMRITSAR: Convocation of Mohan Lal Memorial Institute of Education was held at Mudhal on Sunday. Hundreds of students were awarded their degrees.
