A Day after 18 persons accused immigration agents of duping them of Rs 71 lakh on the pretext of sending them to Canada,another complaint was lodged against one of the accused on Thursday,the police said.
Beena Masooma Ali of Andheri West,Lohkhand Wala,who operated from an office in Sector 70 here,was booked in a separate case for allegedly duping two Ludhiana residents of Rs 4 lakh on Thursday.
Complainant Simranjeet Singh reported to the police that he along with Pawandeep Singh Gill had paid $8,000 to Ali on July 9,2008,for getting work permits in Canada,but neither were the work permits issued,nor was their money returned despite repeated requests.
Taking cognizance of the complaint,the Mohali police have lodged a case of cheating under Section 420 of the IPC against Ali at the Phase I police station here and entrusted the investigation to Inspector Gurmeet Singh. However,no arrests have been made yet.
In another case registered here on Wednesday,Ali,her husband Shaukat Ali,managers Naushaad and Memon were booked for duping 16 residents from different parts of Punjab of Rs 37.3 lakh by promising them immigration to Canada but failed to either keep the promise or return the money.
In a separate case lodged on Wednesday,two youths from Karnal were allegedly duped of around Rs 34 lakh by a group of four immigration agents operating from Chandigarh. According to the complainants,instead of sending them to Canada,the accused sent them to Thailand where they languished in captivity for about two months.
It was only after their families sent them more money that they approached the Thailand Police for deporting them back to India,they said.
