The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Monday directed the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) employees union to desist from striking work and make an attempt to sort out its issues with the government without inconveniencing the passengers.
Following the,the HRTC Employees Union comprising nearly 9,000 employees has decided not to go on strike. After talks were held between the government,management and striking employees,the employees have decided to not go on the statewide strike on June 19 and 20, said HRTC employees leader Rajinder Singh Thakur.
The high court has also directed the state government to defer further action on the request made by the HRTC for invoking the H P Essential Services (Maintenance) Act-1973,in case issues were resolved through talks. The order was passed by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice D C Chaudhary on a petition filed by Ashriwad Society for Civic Awareness,Community Development and Research and Social Health against the decision of the HRTC Employees Union to go on strike on June 19 and 20,even after a section of the employees had announced that the stir will be called off.
Lawyers representing HRTC and the government told the court that discussions have been held with the unions and their demands accepted in a meeting in the presence of the chief secretary. To look into the remaining demands,a committee comprising union representatives has been proposed to be set up.
The demands included converting HRTC into Roadways,timely release of Rs 72-crore financial dues of employees pending since 2006 and filling of 3,000 vacant posts.
