The BJP has moved a resolution demanding a discussion on the issue of booth allotment in the meeting of the General House to be held on Thursday. The BJP had earlier tried introducing a similar resolution which was rejected by the Congress councillors.
BJP councillor Anil Dubey has moved the resolution under Section 57 of the Punjab Municipal Act,applicable to Chandigarh. The resolution states that the issue of booth allotment rocked the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. It further states that with the names of two members of the MC House,Pardeep Chhabra and Pawan Kumar Bansal,in the issue, the image of the House has been damaged.
The resolution says that since the issue is directly linked to the poor and the MC is a democratic institution,a discussion on the issue needs to be held. Dubey stated that the House should resolve to get an impartial investigation conducted on the issue.
The report prepared by former ADC,P S Shergill, highlighted the alleged discrepancies in the allotment of booths in Sector 41. Apart from officials of the Estate Office, the report indicated the involvement of Congress leaders. While the issue had been raised in both the Houses of Parliament leading to disruption of proceedings, any action is still awaited.
BJP had earlier tried to move a similar resolution in a House Meet. However, with the Congress holding majority in the House, the resolution was not accepted. It was stated that the issue is not in the purview of the House and investigation into the matter was already being conducted.
The issue of booth allotment has on earlier occasions caused disruption in the proceedings of the House. The councillors of the BJP had come wearing black robes to the House that led to a tussle and marshals had to step in.
