HC notice to environment dept over garbage burning

Taking note of The Indian Express report published on Monday,the Himachal Pradesh High Court has issued a notice to the Shimla Municipal Corporation,state Environment department and urban development agency over unscientific burning of garbage near Shimla town. The case is listed for hearing tomorrow before a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice R B Misra and Justice Rajeev Sharma.

The court quoted the report and accompanying photograph showing smoke emerging out of a site chosen for a landfill but instead has becoming a dumping site.

The thick blanket of smog emanating after the garbage was set on fire engulfed the town on Sunday and Monday.

There are reports about negligence on the part of the agencies handling the garbage and questions are being raised on the role of municipal and health officials on the issue.
