The Haryana Police is set to recommend the Sweety murder case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further probe. This, after it failed to find a clue in the case for the last three weeks and a spate of protests in Kurukshetra and Karnal. However,it is uncertain if the CBI will agree to take over the probe.
ADG (Law and Order) B S Sandhu said,People are demanding a CBI probe in the case. We have decided to recommend the case to CBI for further investigations. At our end,we have also included the state Crime Branch, who shall investigate the case till it goes to the CBI.
Meanwhile, major protests were witnessed in the entire Kurukshetra town throughout the day forcing a complete shutdown in all marketplaces in protest against the alleged police inaction in the ongoing investigation into the Sweety murder case. The teenage Dalit girl was allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered by unidentified youth on May 5 from the busy market place in Kurukshetra. With no clue in sight, the police had even announced a Rs 5 lakh cash reward in the case, with a hope to get some clue on the assailants.
During the protest, protesters burnt effigies of the Haryana government, deputy commissioner, senior police officers and demanded stern action against the Kurukshetra SP Sultan Singh for having failed to solve the case. What kind of a police force is this? Even after so many days, they have not been able to trace the culprits. Who is safe, when such policemen are guarding us? said Kunal,Sweetys brother.
Several Dalit organisations and NGOs have also joined the stir. Shops were closed throughout the day and only allowed to be opened in the evening. The policemen remained mute spectators to the agitated mob in busy streets and marketplaces of Kurukshetra. People are quite agitated but we need to maintain law and order. The police are doing their duty and we are working on various theories. It is a sensitive and tedious case, which needs to be handled carefully. The accused will not be allowed to go scot free, said a senior officer.
