Harmohan Dhawan’s kin booked for cheating and criminal conspiracy in property dispute
Police said though the names of Harmohan Dhawan, his wife Satinder Dhawan, son Vikram Dhawan and others were also mentioned in the complaint, the matter needs an in-depth investigation.

Police booked Wednesday the relatives of former Union minister and senior Aam Adami Party (AAP) leader Harmohan Dhawan for cheating, submitting false information and criminal conspiracy pertaining to a property dispute in Sector 9. Police said though the names of Harmohan Dhawan, his wife Satinder Dhawan, son Vikram Dhawan and others were also mentioned in the complaint, the matter needs an in-depth investigation.
Somya, the wife of Puneet Dhawan, nephew of Harmohan Dhawan, lodged an FIR against her mother-in-law, Anita Dhawan, husband Puneet Dhawan and brother-in-law Jai Dhawan. She also blamed Harmohan Dhawan and others for cheating. In her complaint, Somya alleged that Puneet Dhawan, Jai Dhawan, Anita Dhawan, Harmohan Dhawan, Satinder, Vikram, Rita Sabharwal and Praveen Chugh filed fake affidavits to deprive her and her son, a minor, from their share in the property. The woman alleged that her son has share in two houses in Sector 9 in which the families are staying but he was not given their share.
The woman mentioned in her complaint that she got married to Puneet Dhawan at a hotel in Sector 17 in July 2005. She said that she gave birth to Puneet Dhawan’s child in March 2006.
When contacted, Harmohan Dhawan said, “It is an old dispute. A matrimonial dispute is pending between my nephew and his wife. We all the family members, including the children of my late brother Harish Dhawan, are united. The matter is pending in a local court. So far, we were not told to produce any documents before the police. Two houses in question were bought by me and my late brother in the late 1980s when, I believed, the complainant was not even born. I will have to check why and in what capacity my wife and children are mentioned in the FIR.”
A police officer said, “The complaint was received a few months back. It was sent for legal opinion. Legal opinion confirmed that an offence took place. We registered an FIR in this connection. We will record the statements of all the involved people.” Harmohan Dhawan was elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Chandigarh in 1989. Later, he became Minister of Civil Aviation. In 2019, he contested Lok Sabha election from Chandigarh on an AAP ticket.
