Gurinder upsets third seed Phogat

Playing against his senior Yogesh Phogat at the CLTA courts during the practice matches taught young Gurinder Singh a lesson or two how to go about shots and keeping a cool mind when the situation is tricky. On Monday,he utilized those lessons learnt and caused an upset when he rallied to defeat the third seed Phogat 6-1,6-2 in straight sets to sail into the second round of men’s singles category.

It was supposed to be an easy outing for Phogat over a less experienced Gurinder. But what followed was series of powerful forehands and well-placed shots by his opposition that led to Phogat’s downfall. Gurinder’s confidence started to rocket sky high after he claimed the first set 6-1. Thereafter,he continued to dominate over his senior and scripted an easy win.

Meanwhile,top seed Chandril Sood of Delhi began his campaign in style after an easy 6-3,6-2 win over Chandrasekhar Mohanty of Assam in a first round match. Chandigarh’s Mandeep S Gill,a lucky loser,got the better of Dhruv Kumar of West Bengal 6-1,6-4. Meanwhile,in the women’s singles category,Noor Paul of Chandigarh rallied to oust Samia Rizvi of Uttar Pradesh 6-3,6-4. Following in her footsteps was Harnoor Kaur Mann who outplayed Steffy Sanghani of Gujarat 6-1,6-2. Similarly,Jaanesh Kaur recorded a 6-3,6-3 win over Shivani M.S of Karnataka. Ikktesh Chahal was leading by 4-3 in the first set when G.K. Shwetha conceded the match due to illness. Lastly,Parminder Kaur came from behind to claim a ) 6-4,1-6,6-4 win over Ankita Bhatia of Delhi.
