This World Ozone Day,students will get together to remind us of the harm caused to the environment
They say if you want to create a strong foundation, teach them young. But in this case its the young who have taken it upon themselves to remind us of things that we have forgotten along the way. The environment, for example,is crucial. We have to save it,given the way it has been harmed over the years, says Arunesh Moudgil of Global Environment Concern (GEC),who along with his club members is organising an event,Green Gandhigiri on September 16. As part of the event, the participants will be holding placards and banners bearing messages on the environment and will be walking across the city starting from Housing Board lights to the Transport Chowk, the railway lights to Piccadilly Chowk and Panjab University.
The timings are during peak hours when maximum people would be able to see us. With about 700 to 800 students from various schools and colleges volunteering,we will stand at the traffic lights for onlookers to read the messages, realise the wrong done to the environment and ways to correct it, says Prikshit Minhas. The ultimate goal is to promote conservation of natural resources and natural eco-systems through various projects and activities.
The day coincides with the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer,a day that has been designated by the UN to commemorate the signing of a protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. Its our little way of saying that we care and want to live in a healthy world, says Preet Inder,a participant.
As part of Green Gandhigiri,a quiz on the environment will be organised at DT Mall on September 14. The quiz will reflect our concern. Here we want to tell everybody that we have a purpose, for which we are ready to rise and act.
