Nearly five million female foetuses are aborted every year,more than 10,000 girl babies are victims of infanticide and every sixth girl child’s death is due to gender discrimination.

Also,50 per cent of all sexual assaults are committed against girls aged 15 or younger,” says Col Harinder Chehal,director,Fortis Hospital Mohali. “Unless women’s health improves,health and well-being of society will continue to be poor,” he says.

On the occasion of Daughters Day on September 26,Fortis will be giving away free health cards to over 100 underprivileged girl children. “On the fourth anniversary of Chetna,a support initiative by Fortis for the girl child,we are taking up the case of Meenakshi,suffering from kidney disorder,” he says.

Nanhi Chhaan,a not-for-profit organization,is also doing its bit to promote the cause of the girl child. “On Daughters Day,we want to draw attention to the appalling condition of girl children. Pre-natal sex identification,foeticide,infanticide,unequal treatment,molestation,improper nutrition,economic deprivation,skills and information,girls dropping out of school are problems that need to be addressed,” says Harpal Singh,chairman,Nanhi Chhaan Foundation. “In some districts of North India,the number of girls is even less than 800 per 1,000 boys. By 2020,it is estimated that we will have 2.5 crore grooms without a bride,” he points out. At Nanhi Chhaan,Singh says,the focus is on restoring the gender ratio.

Awareness and sensitisation is being spread through lectures,educational seminars,hoardings,advertisements and short films. “It’s about getting the message across,” says comedian Jaspal Bhatti,who has directed a two-minute short animation film Nanhi Chidiya that depicts the joy of being a mother to a girl child. The film has already been shown in the 11th Mumbai International Film Festival 2010 and won awards like the IDPA Awards,Golden Cursor Awards and FICCI Frames (BAF Awards) among others. At Global Environment Concern,a youth organisation,they hold one-on-one sessions with parents to increase awareness. “We will be holding hobby classes for the girl children. We will be giving lessons in French,dance and computer,” says Rahul Gupta of GEC,who invites volunteers to contact them at isha.gec@gmail.com. Dikshant Global School is organising a painting exhibition ‘Save The Girl Child’ at Punjab Kala Bhawan,Sector 16,Chandigarh while Panjab University is alloting an additional seat for a single girl child.
