Garry keen to prove worth

A self-proclaimed fitness freak,an athlete,a talented tennis player: there are many things which defines Garry Amor Singh.

A self-proclaimed fitness freak,an athlete,a talented tennis player: there are many things which defines Garry Amor Singh. However,he likes to be addressed as a tennis player who loves to go out on the court and dominate his opponents.

Having recently played Grade V ITF Tennis Tournament at Indore,Amor has made his intentions clear: he wants to turn professional. “Although it has been less than a year since I started playing in ITF tournaments,the experience has been good. Till now I have played 4-5 ITF tournaments and my world ranking is 1300,” informs the 16-year-old.

Son of the renowned tennis coach Kanwaljeet Singh,Amor is one of the fastest tennis talents of the city as the statistics suggest. From winning his first title in the form of Chandigarh Under-10 Tennis Tournament to the runners-up in the Under-16 Super Series held in Guwahati,Amor has left his impact wherever he has gone.

“Though my performances has been good in singles,I have won many titles in doubles category. There are some good events coming up,like the Asian Championship in Delhi this Sunday and I would surely like to improve my ranking in singles category,” Amor,who is currently ranked 40 in U-18 category,says.

Currently relishing the moments that he is spending time with his father,Amor remembers when he first picked up the racquet and started hitting the balls.

“That was when I was seven years old. Since dad was already into coaching,I love hearing him talk about tennis and also see him in action. And slowly I was also drawn towards tennis. And since dad was always on the move,I treasure the moments I get to spend with him. Whenever he is in the city,I make sure we always play tennis against each other. He has always been my guiding force,” says the 10+2 student of DAV School,Sector 15.

It is not only tennis but rather other sports like athletics and swimming which has helped him maintain a high fitness level and he wants to keep performing in other sports to bring laurels both to his family and school.

“I have won silver medals in 5000 and 800 metre inter-state athletics championship. Moreover,we have won gold medal in both inter-school and North Zone tennis tournaments. Taking part in various sports have helped me maintain my fitness level,” claims Amor,whose elder brother Harry Singh Amor is also a tennis player. Garry,who idolises Lleyton Hewitt for his never-die-attitude,is a trainee at Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Assoctiaion.
