There are many things that set this place apart. For starters,Zante, the newly-opened lounge of Sofrito, the restro-bar in Sector 9,is situated away from the happening (read packed to capacity) restaurant-lounge zone of Sector 26. More importantly,it doesn’t highlight only DJ nights as its USP. We know that for a fact, given the success of its recently held jazz night featuring city-based band Combo #3.

Eager to find out more,we trooped in at Zante on one of the happening cricketing days during the World Cup. Though tucked in the basement,Zante is far from being dingy or claustrophobic. The seating — low leather chairs and tables in the centre to comfy couches on the corners — is well spread out. It’s hard to pick what the theme of the lounge is. While the Buddha statues dot the corners, the island bar and the brick textured walls give it the feel of an English pub. The best part, however,is the huge screen on one end that’s projecting the toast of the season — cricket.

The menu card was given quickly and the waiter did not forget mentioning the special combo meals on offer. The bar menu is fairly exhaustive and they seem to have paid substantial attention to their wine list. One can choose from Australian,Chilean,Italian,Californian,French and Indian brands.

It’s the combo meals that got us interested. Priced between Rs 149 and Rs 199,one can choose from pre-plated meals featuring Mediterranean and Indian fare. We settled for a non-vegetarian Mediterranean combo that brought in a portion of clear chicken soup with garlic bread. The soup was aromatic and light. For the main course,we had to choose from an 8-inch pizza, pasta or risotto. We settled for a smoked chicken thin-crust pizza, which was good for two people. Though the main course more than filled us up,the steward pointed out that a portion of Chicken Daviola,an Italian speciality, and a part of the combo, was on its way. The chicken breast stuffed with olives, mushroom and cheese arrived with a saucy dressing and was cooked well and succulent. In comparison, the vegetarians get a portion of boiled vegetables. A brownie completes the wholesome combo meal.

Zante lives up to its lounge theme, with its lazy four course meal, easy seating and gigantic television screen that has the match on. Once the cricket frenzy is over, the team at Zante is considering hosting a Sufi night as well. We like the sound of that.
