Singer-composer Akriti Kakar on her new album
Akriti Kakar does not want to be stereotyped as a singer with a melodious voice or someone who belts out popular item numbers. I would rather be remembered as a versatile musician, she says, the determination obvious in her voice. Kakar was in town to release her third album Akriti,a compilation of original tracks, which after two remix albums,is meant as a step towards self-discovery. The lyrics of the songs have been penned by Neelesh Misra,Rani Malik and Manoj Yadav.
Tunes and words came naturally to Kakar, but venturing into a male dominated area was a challenge. The industry is predominantly male and one has to work hard to prove ones worth, she says. A trained pianist,Kakar says she owes her musical prowess to her mother,a post graduate in Hindustani Classical music,(late) Guru Byomkesh Banerjee,Anandji and Shankar Mahadevan.
Having sung Bollywood numbers like Thaa Kar Ke,Marjaani Marjaani and Khuda Ya Khair,Kakar is lending her voice to Karan Johars remake of Stepmom,Its my Life,Pappu Cant Dance Saala,Mirch and Tere Bin Ladin. The list is long, she says hurrying back to work.
