Hunting for stories, chasing celebrities and politicians and meeting deadlines did not settle well with Dhanveer when he started working with a news channel a few years ago. The first double post-graduate in his family, the 26-year-old from
Barnala had his heart set on the screen. Although I grew up dreaming about being in front of the camera as an actor, the realisation came when I was working a news channel. I was not a news person and so I gave it up for radio, says Dhanveer.
His voice sounded groovy on the radio and, with a degree in Urdu and Journalism,he found himself RJing for Big 92.7 FM three years ago. He then started his own radio show on Punjabi chartbusters, giving song ratings and bringing over Punjabi singers for interviews. The show became an instant hit, says Dhanveer, who was noticed by Big CBS Spark Punjabi channel. They soon set up their cameras in his studio. Now,as Dhanveer relays the show, the channel shoots and airs it on television as a countdown show called Top 20. Two weeks old now,the show features 20 of the latest Punjabi songs and interviews with the best of Punjabi artistes from across the region.
The two-hour-long music countdown show airs Monday to Friday on Spark Punjabi. Apart from Punjabi chartbusters,we also bring in listener interaction, games, celebrity interviews and gossip, adds Dhanveer, who is also set to make his debut as an actor in Gurbir Grewals Punjabi romcom,Yaar Pardesi. The film will release in
August and I play a Punjabi brat, says the RJ-cum-actor,who is in the lead and paired opposite German model Claudia Ciesla (last seen on the television reality show Bigg Boss). Actors Gurpreet Ghuggi and Binnu Dhillon are among the cast.
Acting is a dream come true, says Dhanveer, who has been active in theatre for seven years with thespian Sunita Dhir in Patiala University. The film,he adds,is about the fun-loving youth of Punjab who still believe that marrying a foreigner will give them a ticket to a good life in a foreign land. They dont want to work hard, and only want to become rich overnight by finding a foreign bride, says Dhanveer . But before the curtain rises on his film,he has a date with the radio every evening.
