Independence Day comes with its own share of attractions. Here’s what the city offers on freedom’s 64th anniversary

FREEDOM FLAVOURS: The day holds special delights for the food lover. Rajdhani restaurant in DLF Mall,for example,has put together a special freedom fare. Offering an ethnic feast,the special Rajdhani thali offers food that matches the colours of the tricolour. So you have Trirangi patties,Trirangi Dhokla,Tiranga Begali and Trirangi Halwa as well as Methi Pakoda,Bhinda Corn Masala,Doodhi Paneer Kofta,Batata tomato and Chaula Tomatowala. The restaurant will be decorated with the colours of the Indian flag along with freedom fighter trivia cards on each table. Rajdhani has also tied up with the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) and Re 1 from every thali sold would be donated to the concern. The restaurant would also provide lunch to one old age home in the city on August 15. The special cuisine will be available till August 19. Also announcing a special I-Day promotion is Tilda Riceland which has launched a special festive pack called ‘Aazadi Pack’. Taj Chandigarh is also hosting specials for senior citizens on the day.

I-DAY DEALS: Several brands have also announced mega sales and discounts. Amartex has rolled out a three-day ‘3 Din Mehngai Se Poori Azadi’ campaign offering the discounted prices. While apparel is on a 26 percent discount,flat rates have been announced for grocery and home furnishings. Discounts at Big Bazaar will cover categories such as food,apparel,footwear,kitchenware,bed and bath linen,electronics and gold jewellery. Elsewhere,Sant Ram Mangat Ram Jain Jewellers,a diamond store in Sector 17,is honouring the defence personnel by offering a ‘Independence Week’ discount of 15 per cent plus 10 per cent. “The offer applies to all active,retired and former defence personnel and their family members,” a spokesperson said.

FREEDOM FORTNIGHT: ICICI Bank is celebrating a freedom fortnight till August 25 by inviting customers in Chandigarh,Himachal Pradesh,Haryana,Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir to approach the nearest branch and write messages for the jawans in the form of poetry,quotes and letters. The messages will be handed over by the bank to the concerned authorities in the Army.
