Foreigners in the city are sharing their skills in dance, puppetry and yoga

The music of Michael Jackson comes alive as Julia Klesse takes centrestage. Klesse,a dancer, choreographer and singer from Germany,is here to conduct a workshop on Michael Jackson Dance Styles organized by the Chandigarh Institute of Performing Arts (CIPA) as a tribute to the King of Pop on his first death anniversary. Students aged between 8 to 25 were given instruction’s on MJ’s famous dance styles by Klesse, who is one among many foreign nationals who are coming to the city to share their professional skills.

Klesse believes in absorbing varied cultural influences and incorporating them in her art, from a jazz dance group in the US to musical performances all over the world, from theatre in Italy to workshops in India. “There’s no better learning experience than travelling and India is special,as I’ve done many workshops here,” says Klesse. “We begin with warm up exercises, followed by working towards adapting MJ’s dance techniques,” she says, looking forward to a public performance next week.

For many foreigners wanting to touch base with the city and work here in transit, language, food or weather are not major issues anymore. Most look forward to an exchange and enhancement of skills and perspectives, and the visits make sound sense on the personal, professional and financial fronts. Ellen Davis has been teaching classical ballet to children, adults and professionals for over 30 years. “Ballet is a beautiful vehicle to reflect people’s love and beauty,” she says, imparting lessons at PAUSE,an activity club in Mani Majra. Davis had earlier lived and taught ballet at the Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry and travelled through South India,Orissa,Kolkata and Shantiniketan.

At Planet Fitness in Sector 8,Judith from Mexico conducts pilates and ashtanga yoga classes. “Finding women trainers in this part of the country is really tough and we want to give our members something new to break the monotony,” says Priya Garg,of Planet Fitness. As for Judith, she regards it as an opportunity to interact with people and be in the land of yoga.

Maggie Wilson,a Canada resident, was recently at Coveda in association with the Puppet Theatre to present her solo travelling puppet show,Just Enough. Wilson loves to travel, using puppetry to instruct children, form a creative space and initiate them to build a story. Art,smiles Wilson, has no boundaries. “A child is free to imagine and connect. For me,it’s a perfect way to know different audiences, their reactions and different forms of puppetry, native to each country,” she adds.

At Varun Dance Studio in Panchkula,a variety of international dance forms are taught, which necessitates foreign dance instructors. “The instructors demonstrate authentic dance moves and our syllabus is at par with the best in the country,” explains Varun who had recently invited Sajeeva Hurtado from Colombia, who had twice won the world belly-dancing championships.
