Madness is an essential ingredient in passion,and its this dash of insanity thats the driving force behind Harinder Singh Sidhu,Bhalinder Singh Sangha and Karanbir Singh Bedis challenge to break the Limca record for fastest drive,East to West. Starting May 31,the three will undertake an adventerous journey from the eastern tip of India,Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh to the western most tip,Koteshwar in Gujarat. It will be a drive against time and terrain to set a new world record, tells Sidhu,also a mountaineer whose mission is to climb the highest peaks of all continents; and till now,has scaled two of the seven peaks! As for this expedition,a record time of four days and 23 hours to complete a distance of 3,766 km has already been set by one Dr Arnob K Gupta of Mumbai. No one has been able to break this record since he made it on May 8,2004, Sanghas confident that the three of them will break it – bring it from original 119 hours down to 90 hours. And then when we are done with the horizontal take,we follow up with a vertical,south to north, says Harinder.
A physical and mental test which can leave you exhausted with stressed eyes,stiff joints and back,the drive is certainly not going to be an easy one. Thats exactly why weve been preppeing ourselves and our vehicle, Sangha updates us with their exercises,recces and endurance drives. If we look at the big picture,then Harinder was part of the Hero Honda Overdrive team which broke the Kanyakumari to Leh bike record last year. Being a mountaineer and skier,hes also a pretty fit guy. Bedi,on the other hand is Overdrives motor-sport guy who has won a number of events including shattering the motorcycle record for riding from Kanyakumari to Leh. As for ex-rally driver Sangha,its his technical know-how that completes the picture. But the question is: how will it be quantified? Well be taking pictures,marking a time schedule and log in with a hotel or a police station at all the 25 cities we cross as proof, tells Harinder,who will first do a recce from Ahemdebad to Tezu with Bedi,and then,from Tezu to Koteshwar Sangha will join them. For the expedition,theyll be a using a Xylo provided by Mahindra & Mahindra.
A testament to the human spirit,a benchmark to perform better,thats what this challenge is all about. The record is just an excuse, they get in gear.
