Nisha Sankhala wants to study art and almost managed to do so when she was accepted at the Baroda School of Art. Unfortunately,the 19-year-old had to drop out due to financial constraints. But the colours still beckon and Delhi-based Sankhala is here in Chandigarh for the Fair and Lovely Scholarship 2010 interview. I am studying philosophy,but at heart I am an artist,she says.
In its eighth year,the Fair and Lovely Foundation has come to Chandigarh for the first time. Girls from J&K,Punjab,Haryana,HP,Delhi and Uttarakhand are appearing for the short-listing procedure. The Foundation aims to reach girls who cannot study further due to financial limitations. We are looking for those who have commitment and are deserving, explained Sneh Bhargav,Member of the Knowledge Commission and a panelist. Artist Shiv Singh,who is also a part of the interview panel,added,Its an excellent support and assistance for those who have the capability,but not the means to make it big.
The scholarships are for graduate and post-graduate degrees and the amount,which can go up to Rs 1 lakh,is decided according to the needs of the student. The scholarship is given for a year and is renewed based on the performance of the student.
Jyoti Sharma,who is studying Physics (Honours) from Delhi University and wants to appear for her IAS exams,says I hope to get a scholarship so that I can take coaching classes. Another hopeful,Rama,is studying MSc in infomatics at DU and wants to be a research scientist. Her father sells polythene bags in Delhi,which are now banned. Jyoti is waiting for November,when the final scholarship list will be announced.
