Contrary to the expectation, the online registration facility for patients, which was started recently at 11 departments of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), is getting a poor response.
Only a few patients visit the online registration counters daily, while hundreds stand in queues as before, which is something the new facility was meant to help patients avoid. The reason could be little awareness about the online registration facility, say officials.
On Wednesday, only two patients visited the online registration counter of the gynaecology OPD, whereas more than 100 patients made their OPD cards via the regular procedure. In orthopaedics department, there were only five online registrations, while the number of regular registrations was about 200.

The number of online registration was two in the skin OPD and zero in the ENT Department. The situation was similar everywhere.
An employee at a registration counter said, “The response to online registration is very poor, it has not helped in reducing the workload, as we were expecting.”
He added, “Online entries are less time-consuming. It takes only a few seconds to issue an OPD card to a pre-registered patient, but 5 to 10 minutes for a regular patient. Also, there are fewer chances of mistakes in online-registration.”
On March 14, the institute had launched online registration facility in the Advance Eye Centre. On April 1, the facility was extended to five more departments, namely dermatology, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, Drug De-addiction and Treatment Centre and the Oral Health Sciences Centre.
On April 13, the institute started the facility in internal medicine, general surgery, plastic surgery, ENT and urology.
A patient can register at the institute website http://pgimer.edu.in for a visit to a department on a chosen date in the next one week. After filling in the required information, the partient gets a pre-registration number which is sent to his registered mobile number and e-mail ID. Special counters have been opened at every floor of the new OPD where pre-registered patients can report and get their OPD card without waiting in the queues.
Meanwhile, the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, will launch online registration facility on April 30. It will be available for all departments. Two appointments per hour per doctor will be given.
