Two students of an engineering college in Maulana have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a theft of two laptops and a mobile phone from hostel number 4 in Panjab University (PU),reported three days ago.
According to the police,Rahul Bhandari (20) and Deepak Khandola (20) had come to the city for personal work on April 28 and went to PU with an intention of committing theft.
They entered hostel number 4 and found room number 16 locked. On breaking the lock, they gained entry into the room and stole two laptops and a mobile phone of Narinder Singh and Puneet, who were writing their examinations, said an officer with the Chandigarh Police.
On seeing their room ransacked,Narinder and Puneet filed a complaint with the police. Sources added that the stolen mobile phone had a mobile tracker installed which conveyed the new number used by Rahul to one of the complainants.
They approached the police and communicated the number used by the accused. A team tracked down the number and nabbed Rahul from Maulana last evening, following which he was brought to the city, sources added.
To nab the second accused, the police told Rahul to call up Deepak and ask him to come to Chandigarh.
Deepak reached the Sector-43 bus stand this afternoon and was arrested after Rahul identified him. The stolen laptops have been recovered from his possession, said the officer. DSP Satbir Singh, meanwhile, confirmed that the two have been booked and investigations into the case have been initiated.
University to step up security
As part of action against rising laptop and mobile phones thefts in PU hostels, the authorities have decided to install CCTV cameras besides introducing regular inspections. Talking to Newsline,Dean Students Welfare,Prof Naval Kishore said: “Thefts have been reported in the past. We were, however, able to nab the culprits. We have started doing more inspections and also, there is a committee finding ways to avoid such incidents in future.” Recently,an accused who was nabbed with a help of mobile tracker had reportedly entered the PU hostel without any work and walked out with mobile phones and laptops.
