Eat,Play,Entertain

For dancer-turned-director Prabhu Deva, filmmaking is not about critical acclaim, language genre. For him,it’s all about entertainment

There is a certain endearing quality about Prabhu Deva that makes the man instantly likeable. We are impressed by his humility and put at ease by his non-starry airs. Unlike celebrities who are unapologetic about coming in late,Prabhu Deva apologises earnestly for the delay in the press conference. The filmmaker-choreographer-actor was at Taj,Chandigarh on Saturday along with debutant actor Girish Kumar to talk about his upcoming film,Ramaiya Vastavaiya that releases on July 19.

A love story,Ramaiya Vastavaiya is the Hindi remake of aPrabhu Deva’s debut Telegu film as a director with Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana. Interestingly,Kumar Taurani of Tips, who is launching his son Girish with the film, had no clue that Prabhu Deva was the director of Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana. “Kumarji signed me three years back, before Rowdy Rathore happened. He wanted to launch his son and showed me this film, and I was amused because it was my directorial debut,” said Prabhu Deva. Usually remakes undergo changes and are tweaked here and there, but Prabhu Deva decided to show it as it is. The director was also in Chandigarh a couple of months ago to shoot a number titled Jadoo ki jhappi from the film with Jacqueline Fernandes and Girish. “We were looking for fields, and you guys are so lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful golden fields with yellow flowers,” he said.

A story about a NRI boy falling for a village girl at a wedding and then fighting for her love,Ramaiya Vastavaiya in Telegu means ‘Ram,will you come?’ “My name is Ram in the film, and hence the title,” said Girish, adding how Prabhu Deva told his father that he would have to audition even though he is the producer’s son. “I cleared the audition but it was the dance bit that was tough,” said Girish. Apparently to loosen up his body and look the part, the director made him practise the moves for eight months. “I would send him DVDs of the dance sessions every week to check,” added Girish, who also had to restyle his hair to make them more “unruly and curly”. “I am here to entertain. The industry is growing and there is a need for more actors. This is the right time as there are so many options and choices available,” said Girish,

who loves gaming and is a photography enthusiast.

As a director,Prabhu Deva has raised the benchmark for action flicks by delivering power-packed films such as Wanted and Rowdy Rathore. With Ramaiya,he is venturing into romance, that too in Hindi. “Language has never been a problem for me because cinema has no language. I can make a film in Chinese, and if it has all the masala,it will sell. Yes,agreed there are differences in working environment in Tollywood and Bollywood, but I am not here to show off my talent. I am here to entertain the audience,” says Prabhu Deva. The fact that action flicks seldom get a nod of approval from relentless critics doesn’t irk him. “One ought to be loyal to producers,to actors,to the audience. We have to give them a return on their investment,” he asserts.

Dance still comes first for him,and while he wants to open a dance school, films take up his time. His upcoming films include Rambo Rajkumar, films with Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan, apart from one with Sanjay Dutt productions. Given his quiet disposition,do the superstars listen to him? “When I direct,I am never nervous. It’s a simple process of eat, play, entertain,” sums up Prabhu Deva.
