Easy going for seeded players

As expected, the top seeds of the tournament- Sunil Kumar Sipaeya and Tarranum Handa- registered easy victories and moved into the quarter-finals of the CLTA-AITA Chandigarh Open-1 Lakh men's and women's tennis tournament held at the CLTA Stadium in Sector 10 on Tuesday.

As expected, the top seeds of the tournament- Sunil Kumar Sipaeya and Tarranum Handa- registered easy victories and moved into the quarter-finals of the CLTA-AITA Chandigarh Open-1 Lakh men’s and women’s tennis tournament held at the CLTA Stadium in Sector 10 on Tuesday. While Sipaeya,a former CHART trainee of CLTA,dismantled Pranav Suri 6-3,6-1 in the men’s singles pre-quarterfinal match,Handa was impressive during her 6-3,6-1 victory over Gayatri Kumariah.

However, there were few upsets on the second day of the tournament. Ranjeet Singh,a CHART trainee of CLTA and one of the rising talents from the region, lost to second seed Yogesh Phogat 6-3,1-6,6-0,to bow out of the tournament. Losing to the second seed was not as disturbing as the manner in which he gave up without a fight in the final set.

Ranjeet started off strongly and tested the higher seeded player in the first set. Though he lost 3-6,he took lots of heart from his performance. Carrying on with his rich form,Ranjeet played some wonderful forehands and send down few aces to win the second set 6-1 to take the match into the third set.

Contrary to the expectations,in the deciding set,Ranjeet hardly looked the player who had tested the same opponent in the first two sets and made unforced errors that made it easier for Phogat to carve out a victory.

Meanwhile, wildcard entrant Allan Gomez was also tested by qualifier Rahul Singh but managed to get the better of him in three thrilling sets to win 1-6,6-1,6-3. After losing easily in the first set,Allan made a strong comeback and played from the baseline to claim the second set. Going neck to neck in the deciding set,Allan managed to break the stranglehold and won few points in succession that paved his way for an easy victory.
