Feeling lethargic, low on energy? Blame it on your diet. Put on weight? Must be your food. Acne and lifeless hair? You’re eating too much junk and fried. Mood swings and depression? Probably you are gorging on sugar and carbohydrates. The diet dictums go on…and we are back to square one — you are what you eat, your health is on your plate, eat well to live well. Nutritional therapy is the new buzzword in holistic health care and is not only restricted to diet clinics, but finding its way in yoga classes, gyms, preventive health centres and lifestyle modification sections of hospitals.

“Our belief is not restricted to curative, but preventive therapies for better health and life,’’ remarks Dr Ajit, who apart from a medicine man, practices and teaches Kundalini yoga. Our Indian diet, adds the doctor, has the power to heal. Precisely why his yoga classes are an absorbing mix of yog and also diet doses which are practical and address common health problems.

Seventy per cent diet and 30 per cent sweat is the secret of weight loss and muscle gain, pronounce most fitness experts in gyms, which now have dedicated diet counsellors to monitor progress of their clients and give diet charts, which are personalized to body types and food preferences. “A well-balanced diet is not only about aiding weight loss, but helping gym-goers gain total fitness. Good skin, shining hair, stamina, good metabolism, better immunity,a combination of right foods can achieve all this and more,’’ Jolly of Fitness First for Women has regular diet counselling sessions for the ladies at the gym!

Diet Consultant,Nutrition and Health Educator Aditi Mehrotra,in 11 years of her practice has seen a sea change in patients, who are relying on alternative food therapies for their health problems. Aditi follows the holistic healing approach, with her dietary counselling being governed by Ayurveda, teamed with naturopathy and preventive nutrition. “it’s mandatory to design a program specifically for each client, taking into consideration variables such as age, height, weight, body mass index, metabolic disorders, nutritional deficiencies, physical activity, dietary goals, food preferences and food allergies,’’ the consultant also takes into account environmental pollution, metal toxicity, parasites and mental make-up for constructing a nutritional program. Aditi adds she has many peri-menopausal women coming to her with a common complain of immediate uncontrolled weight gain and a few approach her to help them with a diet that can help them glide through this transition. “I suggest a diet full of colourful fruits and vegetables and a food rich in phyto-estrogens found in grains, beans, nuts, seeds, seed oils, berries, fruits, vegetables, and roots,’’ phyto-estrogens being plant hormones which help in lowering severity of menopausal symptoms. This colourful diet also helps packing in minerals,vitamins,anti-oxidants and fibre. Stress, strain, pains…Aditi conducts workshops and sessions to educate people about the benefits of eating right.

Asserting the view that disease cannot live in a body that is in a healthy emotional state is Pritpal Bhatia,a qualified Bach Original Flower Remedies Practitioner from the UK. Created by Dr Edward Bach,in the ‘30s,these are 38 flower-based remedies that can help manage emotional demands of life. “These flowers grow in Wales in the wild,at a specific place and these remedies work on the emotional condition of the person concerned,’’ Bhatia adds that two people with the same complaint, for instance asthma ,may benefit from different remedies. Gentle, with no side affects,non-addictive,the effect of these remedies, adds Preeti, who teaches art at St Stephen’s,is not to suppress negative attitudes but to transform them into positive ones, stimulating one’s physical system to engage fully in fighting disease and stress.

Dr Sandeep Jassal of Live Life More talks about how optimal nutrition and integrated medicine help in promoting optimal health and wellness. While nutrition prevents deficiencies, optimal nutrition can promote health and prevent degenerative disease. “Our programs integrate optimal nutrition with the type of body you have,in accordance to ayurveda. Diet has a vital influence on health, and scientific studies have associated diet with five of the top 10 causes of death — coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and atherosclerosis,’’ Dr Jassal believes in what people eat and how people eat, contributes in a substantial way to the development of these diseases. Modification of food choices,he adds, can contribute to the prevention of these diseases. So,he develops a customized optimal diet and nutrition program in accordance with a person’s food preferences, problem areas, body structure, metabolism, and lifestyle and disease risk profile. “When it comes to right diet, one size or one solution does not fit all,’’ the doc talks about including various food groups, portion control et al to transform lives.
