The city’s community radio network — Desh Bhagat — celebrated one year of its formation on November 29. The radio station of the community, for the community and by the community,in the past year has brought on board over 1,000 people.

“Doctors came forward with their campaigns on cancer and AIDS,social welfare and student activists made a great partnership in the anti-drug campaign ‘100 Hours,No Drugs’. School students, teachers and principals voiced their thoughts through ‘Aao School Chalein’,the youth found a voice with “DB Community”,women found their own stage with ‘Shakti’,while rickshaw-pullers,rehriwalahs and other vendors presented their demands through Community Talk,” said chairman Dr Zora Singh. Tajinder Kaur,pro-vice-chancellor of Desh Bhagat University and host of the radio station’s signature show ‘Shakti’,added,“The involvement and response by women, both professionals and homemakers, has boosted our morale. We have been able to reach out to an amazing gamut of women. The best was when we received a call from a man seeking permission to be a part of our all-woman show ‘Shakti’.”

Ritu Ghai, programming head of 107.8 FM Desh Bhagat Community Radio, said the year was tough but the overwhelming support of volunteers made the going easy. “Recently,on popular demand,we introduced retro songs from the 70s and 80s and international tracks. With this,we have become the most preferred station across all age groups,” she said.
