Blame it on rapid urbanisation, inflow of migrants or construction work on the fringes, dengue cases in Chandigarh and adjoining areas are steadily increasing. This year, the first positive case was reported on Tuesday.
Experts say dengue is becoming a regular post-monsoon phenomenon in the city. Its a recent phenomenon. A sizeable number of dengue cases are reported each year. In 2004 and 2003,not even a single case was reported in or around Chandigarh. But since 2006,the city has been witnessing regular dengue cases, and the trend continues. Majority of those affected are migrants, a senior Health department official said.
In 2008,167 cases were reported of which 94 were from Chandigarh. In 2007,65 cases were reported from Chandigarh and 34 from the surrounding region. In 2006,182 cases were reported 106 from Chandigarh.
In the 1990s,there was a dengue epidemic in the country, and over 300 cases were reported from the city. Barring this,Chandigarhs dengue history is relatively new, the official added.
Since June this year, the department has issued 300 notices to residents for leaving water stagnant and creating unhygienic conditions favourable for mosquito breeding.
But no fines have been imposed,as the stagnant water was cleaned within 24 hours, the official said.
Dengue, caused by Aedes mosquito,is a post-monsoon fever. Usually,a spurt in cases is seen in September and October. To keep the fever at bay, residents should ensure that water does not accumulate at one place. Avoiding mosquito bites by using coils or repellents is another way of keeping it at bay, a city doctor said.
Patient who tested positive from Mohali
The local Health department swung into action after the person, who tested positive for dengue on Tuesday, was reported to be from Mohali. Teams inspected various low lying areas in the city for stagnant water.
