Flashpoints in South Asia, authored by Major General Rajendra Nath and late Lt Col K S Ludra was released today by General VP Malik. The book seeks to emphasise and expand upon the fact that in the 21st century three countries from Asia,Japan,China and India and a fourth country closely located,Russia, would be amongst the main players on the global stage, particularly in Asia. Their mutual relationships and impact on security issues would largely depend upon a host of factors including the state of their economies, their ambition in projecting their military and economic prowess, their alliances, the ability to tackle terrorism and their individual relationships with the USA and Europe. The maximum wars since World War II have been fought in Asia. This book narrows the focus to South Asia and analyses the issues referred above from a country viewpoint, with Pakistan; Afghanistan and Central Asian States,Iraq,Iran,Israel,Nepal,China,Myanmar with a focus on Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sri Lanka being separate chapters, explains Maj Gen Nath.
The focus on India includes the need for reforms in the defence apparatus and systems, the historical context, the political situation, the cultural context, the economy and the impact of these variables on the future and the analysis of the scenario. Lt Col Ludra passed away in March 2008 while actively associating with the book.
The authors reiterate the need to incorporate the military actively within the decision-making loop as also upgrading and fighting capabilities of the Armed Forces consistently. The authors remain optimistic about the emergence of a strong, prosperous India as its consistently progressive and improving economy. This book is dedicated to the 11 Gorkha Rifles and Regiment of Artillery, the parent arms of the General and Col Ludra.
