DEATH BY CHOCOLATE

IIFT’s annual extravaganza paraded bizarre designs in a mediocre fashion show.

Annual fashion shows are always a good time to view fresh ideas by new talent. Given their good run last season,it’s with much excitement that we arrived for ‘Lakshya 2011’,this year’s showcase by student designers of the Mohali-based International Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT). Hosted at Hotel Bella Vista in Panchkula on a warm Friday evening, the show choreographed by Kaushik Ghosh, was much-publicised for a collection called ‘Drenched In Chocolate’,which would see a model walk the ramp wearing nothing but chocolate. So did she? Well, far from it. Designer Damanpreet Kaur’s collection,an ode to the colour of chocolate, made the most of the dark colours but the piece de resistance — a model wearing a dark brown tube dress with streaks of chocalatey-syrup on her arms and face — was in bad taste.

All was not well with the fittings of the dresses with straps sliding off models’ shoulders. In one case, even a seam ripped off.

However, the 13 theme-based collections showed some bursts of creativity. Devinder Singh’s ‘Bheegi Basanti’ was a fun take on fashion and the student designer used the theme titled ‘Scrap’ to make his point. The newsprint dresses and patchwork skirts were well put together. So was the collection ‘Free Fall’ by Rakesh Thakur. Inspired from waterfalls, the designer used flowing silhouettes and was true to his theme with the use of aqua colours.

Delhi was the inspiration for two designers, with Rayees Akhtar presenting ethnic wear in his collection ‘Delhi Ethno’,while his classmate Zenieb Rao presented her take on Delhi’s sartorial sense titled ‘Fashion Rajdhani’.

The fashion showcase also presented two jewellery lines by Zaira Diamonds. Paired with the Indian collections, the sparkling elements shone through in terms of design and styling. Speaking of all things bling, the two male models for the show, showcased outfits made from predominantly shiny lurex and gaudy net that hurt the eyes. Given the fall-winter theme, designer Poonam Thakur scored with her trenchcoats and all-black ensembles. But it wasn’t enough to pull through an otherwise insipid show.
