A coffee table book captures the rich past and present of the National Cadet Corps

When it comes to coffee table books, bookstores in the city are lined with options. From cinema to photography, nature to art,one has enough to pick and choose from. But when it comes to documenting organisations like the National Cadet Corps (NCC),it’s rare to chance upon comprehensive work, specially one that encapsulates the past and present with freshness of appeal. That’s why Grooming Tomorrow’s Leaders: The National Cadet Corps,a coffee table book catches your attention instantly.

“The book covers the fascinating history and achievements of the Corps from the time of its inception in 1917 till date,” says Lt Gen R K Karwal,Director General,National Cadet Corps, who visited NCC’s Directorate of Punjab,Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh recently and informed of the book’s arrival. “The Corps has over the years been performing yeomen service not only in grooming the youth but also in its tremendous contribution to national integration. We wanted to highlight that effectively,” remarked Lt Gen Karwal.

So instead of staid pages listing out the organisation’s history and present achievements, the book has been designed aesthetically and boasts of a large number of photographs, including an impressive collection of rare black and white ones. According to the book’s author Col R S Chhettri, the book has been written with a view to cater to both the keen as well as the casual reader. Those who just want to have an overview can glance through the photographs and snippets highlighted in various boxes. For those keen to know about the history, achievements and multifarious activities of the Corps, the book holds in comprehensive, well researched text that’s written as crisp as a freshly starched uniform. The 15 chapters are spread over 265 pages and among them the chapter titled ‘Evolution of the NCC’ is specially engaging. A

sepia-toned photograph of the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as as student cadet at Harrow in the United Kingdom is worth a thousand words. As is a unique black and white photograph of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi teaching a young NCC cadet lessons in table manners. The later chapters of the book are in colour, indicating the passage of time and it’s interesting to come across nuggets of information like NCC cadets having scaled Mount Everest, that there’s a NCC Hot Air Ballooning node in Bhopal and that Lt Col Rajyawardhan Singh Rathore, winner of India’s first silver Olympic medal is a former NCC cadet.
